I was just thinking, if Yao doesn't come back.. ever.. anywhere and play again professionally do we end up retiring his jersey or did he not do enough to have his jersey retired?

I mean granted his career was short but no doubt the historical significance should play apart in this too. Him coming from China had a HUGE impact on the league and the sport worldwide and he led the way for others in a huge communist country- He represented our beloved Houston Rockets to the world in such a respectful way with his nice and professional demeanor.

On top he was the FACE of the franchise for many years which should be remembered. Sometimes looking at the rafters it almost tells the story of great and impactful Houston Rockets players we had during that time.. We need a great/impactful players to represent Yao's decade, our last decade to continue the story. I think we should retire his jersey/number.

Edit: I couldn't figure out how to make a poll

    I like Yao but..

    No chance.

However, he will always be a part of the Rockets family.

    No.

But he will be remembered as one of the most talented Rockets though.

Hell no. It would be a disgrace to Rockets like Hakeem for someone like Yao to get his # retired.

internationally famous, good relationship with management, played in 6 all-star games, face of the franchise.

i dont even see how this is debatable.

I would retire his number. He is an all-time Rocket great and he has never played a game in another jersey. On top of that, he was everything you'd want in the player that represented your team both on and off the court. For that, I think he deserves that honor. Literally none of Yao's shortcomings were within his control. He did all that he could.

But additionally I think they'll retire his jersey to strengthen the bond to the Chinese fan base. I think they're hoping a great many of those fans will remain loyal to the Rockets even after Yao retires.

'We' = Les Alexander. 'We' will retire Yao's number for all sorts of reasons.

Is there a player in our history who is more deserving to have his jersey retire than Yao and hasn't? If the answer is no, then I think this is at the very least debatable.

I would favor "yes" to retiring his jersey. He may not have achieved HOF greatness, but he was still an iconic figure for this franchise.

Just as a reference, who has had their number retired in the Rockets Org.? Besides Hakeem and Clyde?

I know Sampson didn't have his number retired, and he made it all the way to the NBA Finals. However, he had a much shorter career and community involvement with the Rockets than Yao had. Still, based on Sampson, I don't think Yao will have his number retired.

Moses, Calvin, Rudy, and CD. I think that covers it. Not sure about Elvin Hayes.

Why would we retire it? It's not like this franchise has accomplished anything (winning wise) since his arrival.

    Me either.
    Definately retire his number

He will probably be the second most recognizable Rocket of all time.
Honestly . . . while he may not have mega stats
I'd be surprised if he does not make the Hall.
Just being the 1st major Chinese player alone . .. may not be enough
    but he was actually good!
