I saw an interview with Michael Moore(Yes, that one). He made some points which I think are significant. Youth voters prefer Sanders, Warren to the rest of the candidates. Of course that won't matter if the younger voters don't vote. We know that Trump's support is heavily concentrated with the older voters. We do know that older voters vote at a much higher turn out than younger voters. It is a huge advantage that Trump has. I also believe that Trump is polling below where his vote will actually be because there are plenty who won't admit to voting for Trump. Just look at his supporters on this board. They don't like to admit that they did vote for him and will again. Two things can be done to encourage the younger voters to show up on election day. 1. Put mar1juana legalization on the state ballots. 2. Nominate a candidate like Sanders, Warren, and quite possibly Yang. Once the young voters show up that will not only be a voting block likely to vote against Trump and for the Democrats, it will also greatly help the down-ballot Democrats. It is the Democrats best chance to take back the Senate. It is guaranteed Trump's base will show up. If the Democrats put forward a candidate that nobody is even half excited to vote for, it will hurt the turn out among Democratic voters. Both Sanders, and Warren push ideas and have a track record of actually fighting for the worker and not just paying lip service to the little guy and blue collar workers that will decide many of the swing states. Combine that with putting mar1juana legalization on the ballot and that could seal the deal in the battleground states. The actual record on mar1juana legalization among younger voters isn't a given. It definitely brought them to the polls in states in 2012 but hasn't been clear cut since. So Democrats need to make a point of doing pushing that. Also make sure that minimum wage increases are hyped by Democrats since Trump hates those and the nation heavily favors the increases in minimum wage. Bringing those voters out could make the difference not only for the Presidency but also for the Senate.
... not alienate the middle and scare off moderate voters who are doing fine economically with radically different economic policies. See Corbyn, Jeremy. Every moderate that flips to Dems over Trump is worth twice as much as finding a new voter.
One of my favorite points Moore makes when he makes his case for Sanders eight times a week on network television is how Sanders won the Michigan primary. As if that means anything. As if that, in any way, foreshadows how people will vote in the general election. In a critical state that abandoned the party in 2016. Anyway, yes to mar1juana legalization being on the ticket. At least we can agree on that.
Fairly certain that's completely impossible, and I'm not sure what this "ticket" is, but nice thought. What are the historical rates of young people voting in Presidential elections? Going back to, say, Kennedy.
Jeremy Corbyn lost because he played it both ways on Brexit. He tried to be against it without alienating the workers that were in favor. It is why, it is better to move firmly in one direction rather than get all soft and mealy mush. Buttigieg is the only millennial in the race but the young voters would rather vote for the oldest guy in the race. It is because he's soft. I don't think there are many Trump supporting moderates out there. There are millions of millenials who stay at home. Both Sanders and Warren are more moderate than Trump. So if there is a choice of who is more moderate, Sanders and Warren beat Trump. The fact is that people who support Trump don't do it because he's so moderate.
Gotcha, I'm well aware of what a national party platform is. That's a whole different thing than "ticket" or "state ballot".
How about instead of trying to manipulate turnout with side issues... just nominate a sane person. A non socialist? Someone who isn't promising the moon on a stick and suggesting they will take more of my money to give me "free" ****. Also China cut a deal with Trump it seems. Looks like the smart money there thinks he will get reelected otherwise they'd wait it out. A win it seems for Trump at first glance that no one around here is mentioning. Instead we have pipedreams about mar1juana ballots and people who still think whip-cream-**** Yang and his $1,000 handout nonesense are viable.
The prescription on the right is to go further and further right and no one ever tells GOP candidates that they maybe should chill out on their far right policy ideas. Also, people consider medicare for all 'Far Left Socialism'. It makes no sense if you have to sell out your ideology to win an election.
Yes it makes sense.... politics is about compromise. No side should get 100% of what it wants. Also I would love to hear how far right running a 90s business democrat from Manhattan is... lol who is socially a playboy who cares little about social issues. Oh he likes enforcing existing border laws. Yeah super far right. So spooky.
This is the crux of the issue that 'Moderates' and right wingers pretending to be 'moderates' don't seem to understand. The Democrats RAN a Moderate in 2016... It. Did. Not. Work. Biden is just like Clinton, he even has this stupid Hunter Biden thing that Trump will claim is 'corruption' and Trump's base will eat up like they did Clinton's emails. It doesn't help to have a moderate if said moderate can't generate excitement that gets the democratic voters out to actually vote. Not only that but... Moderates are actually a myth. <--- Data to prove it. It's not actually a thing. Elections are about who can generate the most hype and excitement for their base and who can present enough flaws so that their opponents base decides they don't care to vote. Basically, I can claim to be independent or moderate and anyone that knows my posting history here knows that's not true. Hell, we have several clearly strong right posters that say they are 'Centrist' or 'Moderate' and all they do is fall on the right of very issue that's brought up...yet these are the people that identify as 'moderate' and are being polled as 'moderates' or independents. 'Moderates' usually lean left or right or belong to some group that leans left or right. A moderate that is anti-immigration is NOT voting for a Biden, is not voting for Buttigieg, is not voting for Warren, is not voting for Sanders. No matter how 'Moderate' this Democrat plans on being they simply aren't voting for that person. So for that person to sell out their base to appeal for someone that may just sit at home or vote for Trump is to go after votes you are never going to get. TL;DR Moderates are a myth, true centrists and moderates are such a small group of the population that it is unlikely that they sway any election. Every election is about getting people excited to vote for you and appealing to more of your side than the other person.
Not sure what him being from New York has to do about anything. His immigration policy is about race. It is built by someone and constructed by someone that makes this very clear...first Bannon and then Miller. You can be naive about it if you want but I won't. Miller has enough dirt on his true beliefs and this is someone close to Trump.
Clinton is a moderate democrat, it didn't work. So now people think another moderate is going to work? So when Biden wins the DNC and loses in the general what will you tell the Democrats to do then? Become Republicans?
Not elect Biden, I think he would get curb-stomped by Trump in the debates. Everybody else could probably be coherent and quick enough to do alright in the debates. I, obviously think Bernie is the best candidate. He voted against all the bad trade deals that hurt the rust belt so much (the reason Trump won), I think that would really give Bernia a boost in those states. He can rail on how Trump is a fraud, that he didn't bring any jobs back, and how he himself voted against NAFTA, TPP, how we isn't corrupt, doesn't take any PAC money, any billionaire fundraiser donations, how he is only beholden to the people, which Biden certainly couldn't do, which Trump doesn't do because he's a self-serving billionaire. I think bills like M4A, tuition-free college, medical debt cancellation, student loan cancellation, and him being the strongest on working to fix climate change could bring in and energize a ton of new voters.
