Finally saw it today...and I managed to stay spoiler free the whole time! Was great because I got to see it in Imax without huge crowds to fight and to top it off, on a discount Tuesday....I paid $18 total for my ticket, large popcorn and large coke icee! I'm sure nobody cares, but I thought it was MUCH better than TFA...although it wasn't without faults. Overall though it had a great opening battle, (mostly) fun new characters, just the right amount of humor and a great final 45 minutes. I'm sure it's already been pointed out here (i've avoided this thread like the plague for fear of spoilers and won't read 35 pages to catch up) but I do find it highly ironic that of the big "3" actors of the original series (Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill) only Carrie survives in the movies while she is the only one who has passed in real life. Anyways, thought the Kylo Ren character is finally stepping into the bad guy role with authority...but you can see the set up for the finale coming from a mile away. I guess it doesn't matter though. People don't go to Star Wars for complicated plots...and to be honest this one had a few surprises I didn't see coming so kudos. Overall, I give the move a 7.5 out of 10 and #4 in the 8 film franchise.
I enjoyed the movie. I would say its the 3rd best in the series. My problem with this new trilogy is its missing a really menacing, bad ass villain. Kylo's angry voice doesn't work for me.
Liked 1. Kylo and Rey fight against Snokes guards, probably the best lightsaber fight of any SW film. 2. Overall visuals, I watched it in 3d and I have to say it was worth it. 3. Movie was less predictable than TFA which was my main complaint about that movie. 4. Paige. I'm in the minority but I liked the idea that a normal, ugly, no talent maintenance worker could be a big part of the story and the events that ensued. 5. Poe, he was by far the character that developed the most. We saw him transform into a leader this movie as a result of failure. Disliked 1. It starts off extremely slow 2. Luke was a mopy b**** for most of the movie. 3. Killed off Snoke cheaply. And weaponized light speed? Really? 4. Kylo, as a villain he sure messes up a lot. Furthermore how can we take him seriously as a villain when Rey has repeatedly shown to be more powerful than him every step of the way. There's no sense of danger because we know that whenever they do face off for all the marbles, Rey is going to destroy him. The movie makes it a formality. 5. Rey, again why is she so perfect? If Kylo fails at everything he does, Rey succeeds at everything she does. Even to the point of not even being seduced by the dark side or Snoke at all.
^Why was Luke pure in the ot? The content handlers did a little gender bending and cloned her. Only difference is that they just dismantled the Skywalker lineage. Americans love and worship royalty but Rey's story is more every(wo)man. Luke should've quit the force earlier and got plenty laid with his legend status. He was set. Can't turn dark if you're cut off the force. Might've been a whole lot happier.
Having watched it and reading through complaints, here's my take: First time a SW movie didn't feel like Star Wars to me. I was hyped for the Disney purchase after seeing TFA and Rogue One, but this one seemed more like a generic Disney action flick to me. I applauded JJ Abrams for going back to the more natural feeling with real sets and props, but Rian Johnson went back to the prequel-ish tendency of cgi overkill. Especially the casino planet felt like a completely different movie and was just filled to the max with nonsense. The humor felt out of place a lot and you could see that they were going for merchandise money with these little creatures (don't even remember their name) who only exist for cheap laughs and children. You also had humor thrown in during scenes which should have been incredibly emotional, for example when Finn woke up. Next, I absolutely hate what they did to Luke. Watched so many interviews with Mark Hamill and he's completely right. Luke was the most optimistic character in the Galaxy, always risked his life to save his friends and family. Hearing about Han's death, he doesn't want to take action? BS. He tried absolutely everything possible to bring Vader back to the light side. Vader at that point was the 2nd most evil person in the entire universe and committed so many terrible things, yet Luke believed in him. Now you're telling me that Luke completely gives up on his nephew only because of an evil aura, although Ben apparently hasn't even done anything bad yet? Complete opposite of what Luke stood for in the original trilogy. They reduced one of the greatest heros in movie history to a grumpy fukk and also used him for cheap laughs again (fckin milk scene). Concerning his departure: Yes it was a neat move and showed that Luke in the end was still a hero, but he should've gone out on a way bigger scale. Either have him fight there in person and going out like a total badass, or have him come to Rey's rescue and dying in an epic battle vs Snoke, who also deserved a much better ending. The deaths of legends like Luke, Han, General Ackbar etc were way too uneventful in my opinion and show that Disney wanted to get rid of the old characters in an easy way in order to focus on the new protagonists. It doesn't do the old trilogy any justice and feels bad to older fans. One epic plot hole: Why wouldn't the pink haired Vice-Commander tell Poe about her plans instead of not saying a word and risking the failure of the whole operation? Makes zero sense and seems like the director again only wanted to surprise the audience, or needed a plot for this idiotic casino planet and Finn's weird romance with Rose. Also, if one ship going into hyperspace can eliminate an entire enemy fleet, why not do it way earlier? Carrie Fisher died and Leia should've been awarded an iconic death, so why not have her do it instead of the vice commander who no one gives any f about? And talking about Leia, wtf was that floating scene? I cringed so hard when seeing this nonsense and it felt totally out of place. Also, Rey is far too strong without any kind of training. Luke and Anakin were said to be the most powerful Jedi in history, but both needed to go through years of training and at first struggled to even lift the smallest objects. Yet, Rey can do literally everything without any training and ***** on the whole training aspect or Luke and Anakin's back story. Same with teen Kylo beating Luke after feeling betrayed. Overall, it was an okay movie but it destroyed a bit of the SW legacy to me by trampling on old heroes and feeling like a different franchise, first time I'm not really looking forward to a new Star Wars movie and having huge concerns with the Disney deal.
He knew because he was sitting with Finn and Rose when they talked to Poe on the communicator and Poe mentioned the plan to leave in the shuttles.
weaponizing light speed is one of the dumbest things ever. Really no one thought to do this to a death star? cmonnnnnnnnn
^That. Del Toro didn't sell them out until after they got caught. Even though he came off as pure shady, they hinted at making him rogue-ish like Lando.
Yep these are my dislikes. I wanted kylo to kill rey for snoke SOOO BAD and leave luke to be the last Jedi. Master vs student would’ve been so much more badass than rey vs kylo. Rey is predictably getting out of every situation. I liked snoke and thought it was cheap and too quick + easy to kill him. Also the light speed part was trash. If it was that easy to just 180 and light speed into the ship to destroy it then why didnt she just do that to begin with? She was already sacrificing herself as a decoy anyway.
Examples of MASSIVE plot holes in The Last Jedi: Spoiler Captain of First Order ship: There's the rebel flagship. It's low on fuel. We're firing on it, but we can't use our big guns yet because we're still out of range. Once they're out of fuel, we can catch up to them, use our big guns, and destroy them! General Hux: Ok. Are they at warp speed? Captain: No, they don't have the fuel for it. General Hux: Ok. Can WE go to warp speed? Captain: Yeah, we've got lots of fuel General Hux: So, can't we just warp ahead of them with some of our ships and surround them? Captain: ummm..... Spoiler Resistance person: Holy crap! They can track us at light speed!?! I didn't know they could do that! [30 seconds later] Resistance person: I know everything there is to know about how they can track us at light speed, what device is used, which ship is using it, and how we can take it out! Spoiler Luke [to Kylo]: I'm going to fight you with this light saber. Kylow: Hey isn't that the same light saber that Rey and I split in half earlier in the movie? Luke: ummmm..... no. This is my other one. You know, the one I made in ROTJ. Kylo: No, dude. That one was green. This is your white one which got split in half. Are you doing a jedi mind trick? Luke: ummmmm.... these aren't the droids you're looking for.. Spoiler Rose: Hi. I'm Rose. My nose is wider than my mouth, I have no neck, I'm cross-eyed, I don't show any facial expressions, and I can't act worth a damn. that's probably why I'm just a grunt person working deep in the engine rooms. [1.5 hours later] Rose: Hey! Look at me! I'm a pilot flying in a rebellion battle!
What did those speeders (only 13 I think) even do in the last battle? I don't remember them shooting anything, just kicking up the red dirt which wasn't even part of their tactics. As for the Kylo and Luke part. I think they were going with Kylo's mind being clouded with anger and thats why he didn't notice the force projection and the light saber. That's what I was thinking when I first watched it.
All they did was get blown up. But hey, at least it paved the way to show Finn is dedicated to the Resistance enough to sacrifice himself and that Rose is in love with someone she idolizes.
I don't think they were able to get close enough to try and do any damage. It looked like the wing opposite the cockpit had guns on it, but why waste them if you're too far away for them to be effective, which is why they were calling off their attack. Plus it was more about buying time to get their message out, for help to arrive, for anything really. It was an act of desperation by a small pocket of fighters that remained of the resistance. Here's a good quote... “One of Rian’s overriding principals on them is … they are basically heaps of crap,” says Pablo Hidalgo of the Lucasfilm story group. “They are old and not meant to instill confidence. They are like a lot of things in the Resistance — weapons of last resort. Use what you have on hand, even old, outdated stuff falling apart for years. If you believe in it, hopefully it will fly.” http://ew.com/movies/2017/11/30/star-wars-last-jedi-resistance-ski-speeders/ Here's also a good explanation on Luke's behavior in TLJ. Honestly I don't understand why many - who disliked the movie - had an issue with his actions in the film. Luke was always a character who acted a bit impulsively based on his instincts, and who often wouldn't see the forest from the trees. Makes perfect sense then, that in a split-second moment, he thought killing Ben was the right thing to do. And that moment was fleeting. It's not too unlike his moment in ROTJ where his anger consumed him and he almost killed Vader. Plus, it's been 30 years, plenty of time for someone to change. https://movieweb.com/star-wars-last-jedi-luke-skywalker-behavior-fan-theory/
Finally saw it last week. Unlike 2 years ago, I've avoided this thread and I didn't watch a single trailer. As a fanboy, I lowered my expectations and was willing to ignore all the major (and frankly weird) plot holes and I found that I enjoyed the movie a lot more in that state of mind. I took my boys and they LOVED it. That's enough for me. They told me afterwards that they've been needing to pee for about an hour but didn't want to miss any of the movie so they held it. So proud! I'm hoping that the non-trilogy movies will satisfy my fanboy tendencies. Rogue One certainly did and then some. I loved every second of that movie and oddly enough, my boys didn't like it as much as TFA or TLJ. Looking forward to the Han Solo movie more than VIII. As far as the movie goes, I loved the beginning battle and the final scene. I loved that Benicio's character didn't do exactly what Lando did in V like i thought he would. Lando was good, then bad, then good again. Benicio's character was good, then bad...period. I liked that we finally got to know Poe. His character is a lot more compelling than Finn and even Rey, frankly. Like everyone else, I really hated the casino plot and Leia floating around like Mary Poppins. That was just weird. So yeah, I enjoyed the movie for what it was - a fun couple of hours in the theater, but nothing more. But the fanboy in me is really looking forward to the Han Solo movie. And more Star Wars Rebels!
