Given our political differences are two great, would it be better to just split the country into two Americas? Countries that could be allies and friends, but would be able to have their own sets of laws which would make both sides happy?

Movement would be more open like it is with two countries in the EU, and we'd have one economy still, but politically, two governments. One with A president and congress, and another with Trump.

To get contiguous areas, you will need to split into more than two.

The country is already split ... 50 ways.

There is something called States Rights, something the leftist wing nuts refuse to acknowledge.

Only sweet lou would suggest a civil war. Insane.

Just California to begin with. That will set things in motion very nicely indeed.

I've been hearing this rhetoric from the right a lot actually. I keep up with a large amount of conservative media because I think its funny. It can be anything from the POTUS claiming there will be violence if the democrats win the midterms, Alex Jones claiming the liberals will attack on July 4th, to rednecks boycotting Nike with their guns saying things like "I can't wait for this war to start". What war?

The irony is if the US was divided by party line, one side would take California, New York and basically anywhere else where we would find the apex of culture, institutions and ideas. Conservatives would be left with what? Farming and WWE and Kid Rock? There must be a huge complex the people of these worthless states feel which in turn leads to racism and fear, eventually becoming susceptible to cults like religion (which have become denominations with ideas that are pretty far away from their origins) and or following the guy who founded Trump University, just because they have a much easier time following along with his 5th grade speaking level.

Doesn't have to be contiguous but yeah, more than 2 is fine.

You could just have the regions. Northeas

New England (everything north of Long Island)
Mid-Atlantic: NY, PA, NJ, DE, MD, VA, NC
Mid-West: OH, MI, WI, MN, IN, IA,
Pacifica: CA, OR, WA, NV, CO, NM, AZ, HI
    Florida: FL
    Texas: TX
Putin Land: SC, AL, MS, LA, AK, OK, NE, TN, WV, MO, ID, WY, ND, SD, MO, UT, etc

Not a civil war, more of a voluntary split politically but not economically. We'd still be freely able to travel and do commerce just like in Europe with the EU. We'd share a national defense system and even a United Military Force that would act to protect all 50 states.

But it would free us from having to have one political party dictate to us what we fundamentally feel is contrary to our values. It would end the divisiveness as we'd finally get to all have the lives we want. Putin Land could have all their gun laws and pollute the environment to their hearts content. They can ban transgendism and kick minorities out if they like. They can pass the Muslim ban. They can cut taxes for the rich to 0! Imagine how happy they could be!

If it was divided like that, you'd have California, New York and a few other states on one side and then all of the others on the other side.....and it wouldn't be long before the p*****s in those few states were conquered by the others.

Isn't it funny how liberals would have no problem letting say Mississippi leave the union and become it's own country. But CA or NY - and the right wing nuts go apeshit haha. Look at them freak out at the idea.

Well, it would be bad news for those deep red states. They'd have no money for anything and would likely just start **** with other states.

Meanwhile, states like California and New York would thrive, as they have been doing, under democratic leadership.

My guess is these deep red areas will continue to be pass over USA, as they have been for a while now.

And lose some of the best engineering and STEM schools on the planet along with some of the most powerful corporations on the planet?

I think we can afford to lose Alabama, Mississippi, Florida etc more .

Once they secede and you re-conquer them, you could always redistribute their wealth to more deserving parts of the country.

Bullshit electoral rivalries mostly adjudicated at the federal level on a fall Tuesday in even numbered years don't mean **** all to minorities, immigrants, the impoverished or unmarried women trying to get an education, housing, employment or goods and services that are all administered at the local level by prosperous whites of both political stripes who all indirectly discriminate in at least one arena of their life. The only check on that is federal initiative based on court precedent, legislation and constitutional amendments that took a century and a civil war to enact and all go away the second anyone secedes or formulates a new government.

Public funding for any K-12, community college or four-year educational institutions that disproportionately cater to non-whites, any semblance of integrated, equitable county health care, any residential policies that accommodate low-income or even multi-family housing, any hiring or termination policies or oversights that even attempt to scrutinize or mitigate racial or gender bias or outright exclusion, any policies that regulate hazardous work-site or hazardous materials exposure in low-paying jobs, it all goes away in a heartbeat if you dismiss the existing federal apparatus.

This isn't even the worst part, aside from the anti-abortion clinic and anti-LGBTQIA death squads; you'll have two militaries, two intelligence organs and two federal law enforcement agencies that while sharing the same space geographically, will each think they're the strongest in the world and destroy each other trying to prove it.

I think it's sad that neither side can admit they need each other and recognize the fallacy in thinking their own truths and perceptions are universally held whereas the others are mistaken or ignorant.

People should start questioning who benefits from these divisions where emotional exchanges override reason and dialogue. Sure it's good motivation to get people to vote and be more activist but how can the cause be pure when the drivers behind them are not?

This fear and loathing of our neighbors doesn't end when we draw lines and boundaries to avoid each other

Is that why everyone is fleeing California and moving to red states?
