    There's a separation here between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

    Iran is actually working on getting to 4% of GDP on R&D by 2030, 75% of all current R&D initiatives are government-funded, and Iran has spent pretty heavily on nanotech and biotech initiatives. Of course multilateral sanctions and a concerted effort to isolate the Iranian scientific community have not helped things from a local or global scientific perspective.

    Picking one stat as the end-all be-all of advancing scientific progress can also be misleading. One way to flip that chart around, just as an example, is the # of scientists assassinated by domestic security service--Israel would be near the top on that figure.

    Things are murkier than you think. I'd make a general point here that science is never advanced by partisan or political bulls**t be that fatwas or the political murders of researchers.

    You know there will always be people who shouldn't be there and probably came because someone took their money and promised them a new life of prosperity.

    There are many people who have truly suffered deeply and are legitimately fleeing war. Obviously the guys in this video are not.
