Agree. Unless a player is a truly elite prospect (like Kyle Tucker) or a catcher, they need to have experience at 3 positions before they get to the majors. Even guys like Reed should get time in the outfield.

He is right though. There is zero reason for Reed to play the OF unless you just want him getting ABs. He should never appear in an MLB game in the OF.

 

Sure, Reed will never be a major league OF. But there are several benefits to having even physically limited players get some time at multiple positions in the minors.

For players trying to break into a crowded big league roster, knowing that if they have to be forced into service in an emergency situation that it won't be completely foreign has some value.

Playing other positions might have value to the player in several ways; being forced to play LF may make Reed realize he would be well served to get in better shape. Seeing the ball from different angles may help a player when fielding their primary position. Plus, you never know when a guy might show some aptitude you didn't think he had.

In a crowded farm system, getting guys regular ABs can be challenging. Having several guys who need time at a position (right now there are 5 guys who should probably be getting at least some time at 1B in AAA: Reed, White, Moran, Davis, and Singleton) means players will need to move around to avoid getting pushed to the bench.

I'm not talking about Reed playin RF/LF in 75 games. I just think it wouldn't be a bad idea to have him in the OF 10-20 times.

If we could turn 2 or 3 of Reed, Singleton, White, Moran, Preston Tucker, Davis into a Martes-like flyer or bullpen depth...that would be great.

 

I think people forget that these guys have been playing this game basically their whole life.

They've probably played all over the place at some point... in some cases, these guys were pitchers or catchers at high levels in their youth (HS, etc.), but they'll never ever ever go back to those positions again.

They know what they can and cannot do at this point. More importantly, guys who are paid to coach them know what they can and cannot do... and know the benefits or detriments of making a player learn a new position.

It would be a terrible idea to put Reed anywhere where he is just flat-out bad or uncomfortable. It serves no benefit. If that's the only way he can be motivated to get in shape, he's got much bigger personal/professional problems and he's never going to make it to the majors.

 

Reed was 12-2 with around a 2.00 ERA his last year of college.

 

Stupid Luhnow... should have also developed him as a LOOGY.
