Tilman might have it, on purpose...for damage control (although how eating American Chinese takeout really works for that is another topic).
This puts Tilman in a tight spot. How much $$$ is the Rockets relationship with China worth, and how much $$$ is Morey worth to the Rockets? Then you have to weigh that with what the NBA thinks, and also with what the long term consequences of caving to this might be. I wouldn't fault him for firing Morey under these circumstances, but we'll learn a lot more about Tilman in the next few weeks, I think. I wonder if they have or could have Yao working some things behind the scenes to help smooth things over.
Morey pissed off someone (China) you do A LOT of business with. It’s pretty simple. If Morey wasn’t one of the best GMs in the league, he would’ve been fired. The NBA knew who they were getting into business with. Let’s not raise moral objections now. You don’t think Les was benefitting from the Yao era? Appease the client with losing your best gun (Morey). And move on.
Nah screw that, no one should be firing Morey because of pressure from ANOTHER country. That’s ridiculous. Not to mention that Morey is in the right and also not to mention Morey already issued an “apology.”
Lots of Twitter support stateside... "Getting fired for supporting democracy would be prime 2019" "When supporting peaceful democracy becomes “an undeniable mess” lol" "It shouldn’t be a mess Our country Our game Our constitution If China doesn’t like it Give them their billion $ back Basketball will survive"
You keep looking at it as a FOREIGN nation is telling us what to do. China is a CLIENT for the NBA. People speculate that the digital rights deal is $1.5B. You think the NBA or any business is willingly to lose out on $1.5B?
pandering to china while ignoring the home market in america will cost the nba even more than $1.5B... have you even thought about the repercussions that inevitably will come about if the nba is willingly supporting a suppression of free speech and democracy... IN AMERICA?!? one might think the black lives matter movement in the nfl caused a firestorm... just wait til u see what happens if morey gets fired. this is something all americans can get behind and will get behind... for morey and not for china.
Client, Foreign nation blah blah blah, they are trying to get rid of Morey over a deleted tweet. I dont care what they are. Its nonsense.
I don’t know what profession you are in but in what world do you take somebody’s money and go on social media stand against them politically? I am really surprised that people didn’t think China would react this way.
The NBA has players doing that all the time. Lebron Literally went on social media and called Trump a bum along with other players. There are a bunch of republican owners in the NBA. And MOREY DELETED THE TWEET. Enough is enough with this nosense.
I don’t think that is the correct example. If Lebron (when he was in CLE) went against Dan Gilbert’s Casinos, saying something to the degree of ” I think gambling is terrible. People should stand against it.” Now that’s an interesting situation I really love to see unfold.
Gilbert wouldnt do crap since its Lebron. Greg Popovich speaks out against Trump all the time and gueeeess what. And you know what, who cares, if they did or didnt do anything. The Chinese government trying to get Morey fired is garbage and wrong, they can kick rocks.
I believe Gilbert’s main business is his Casinos. I wouldn’t be so sure that he wouldn’t get rid of Lebron. I don’t see how Popovich speaking against Trump affects his and the Spurs bottom line. NBA fans tend to lean left then most sports.
Bro if you dont this is a severe overreaction by a FOREIGN GOVERNMENT over a deleted tweet then we are done talking. If you think we have to fire Morey then we are done talking. And if you think this is a team that can be controlled by someone else's government(despite putting it under the guise of a just a business partner) then we are done talking. Taking someone's money doesnt mean they own you. The NBA provides them with the best basketball on the planet, lets see how they like their CBA.
The NBA loves to promote itself as a progressive organization...yet bends at the will of contracts and dollars just like the capitalist pigs they vow to oppose. Funny.
Do I think (USA point of view) this overreaction? Yes. Am I surprised that China reacted this way? No. Do I think Morey should be fired? No. I love Daryl. Should the NBA try to smooth things with that market? Yes. Taking someone’s money doesn’t mean they own you but you shouldn’t be shocked if they pull out if you piss them off.
