Should they make either the 1st or 2nd team? Will they? Who are their competition?

I feel like that Dwight has long been recognized as a top defender and Beverley is getting his recognition (judging by commentary during HOU's national games). But there are better defensive teams out there and the Rockets are mistakenly viewed by some as a bad defensive team due to their high pace. The head coaches supposedly vote for these but who knows what their knowledge level or the knowledge level of the PR intern that they task with voting is.

Bev got beaten on defense a lot, but he compensated by making some hightlight defensive plays. It's like Westbrook on offense - very aggressive and productive with less efficiency, but it's much needed in our system.

The voters love blocks and steals (one of the reasons why Ibaka is a perennial 1st team selection), so Dwight might have trouble beating out Hibbert, especially if he doesn't get his Blk/g up over 2. Personally, I think Dwight should be rewarded for his superior defensive rebounding, but the coaches might look at Indiana's team defensive #s and give it to Roy. He'll also have Jordan (probably overrated as a defender), Noah, and Gasol to contend with.

Beverly might make the 2nd team, based on Avery Bradley making it last year. Coaches seem to notice the guys who pressure the ball 94 feet (plus Tony Allen's missed a lot of games).
