    I think he’s an alien posing as a human being, secretly delving into the mysteries of basketball played at the highest level. His interest reflects the interest his people, living on a world other than our own, have in the game of basketball. They had intercepted the broadcast of game 5 of the 1986 NBA Western Conference Finals due to a rare anomaly in the space/time continuum.

    Enthralled and wanting to know how such athletic beings could do what they could do, they became determined to find out. After a planet wide search, Silver was found to most closely resemble a human being. He was sent to Earth to learn all he could about the game. The mistake Silver made while using his arcane alien powers to worm his way into a position of power and responsibility? It was failing to understand a fundamental truth of basketball. The players and the coaches are the game, not the referees and not the Silver’s of this league, alien or otherwise.
