Young eyes UT; McCullar tabs UH

Though most prospects will return to making official visits later this week, the past weekend certainly provided football recruiting fans with something to chew on.

Madison's Vincent Young, the nation's top prospect, said he is leaning toward the University of Texas; North Shore's Chad McCullar, a Chronicle Top 100 wide receiver, committed to Houston.

Young was recently named the Student Sports All-America National Player of the Year and the most valuable player of Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

"We (had) a lot of Texas players on our (West) team that have already committed," Young said. "And they were telling me I need to come with them, and I like how the Texas fans came out to support them and that's the stuff I like to see. That was something that made me think about Texas more."

Texas had the most committed recruits (seven) playing in the game. Also, 17 of 24 first-team USA Today football players and 10 Gatorade Players of the Year saw action.

Young (6-5, 200), who plans to visit Texas this weekend, compiled 161 all-purpose yards in leading the West team to a 26-6 victory. He also threw a couple of deep passes that were dropped, including one that traveled 63 yards in the air.

Besides Texas, Young is also considering Miami, Arkansas and Southern Mississippi.

"I'm waiting to see what that quarterback (Brock Berlin) does," Young said of the Florida sophomore that's considering transferring to Miami. "Miami and Texas have the two systems that I think would fit me best offensively."

According to NCAA rules, Berlin would have to sit out next season -- Ken Dorsey's senior year as Hurricanes quarterback -- and would be eligible to play in 2003 and 2004.

Meanwhile, McCullar continued North Shore's pipeline to UH by committing to the Cougars over the weekend. The 5-10, 173-pound receiver with good hands and 4.4 speed caught 33 passes for 737 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. He also returned two punts for scores.

McCullar plans to visit UCLA and Stephen F. Austin.

in another article from rivals100.com, written after the all-star game, young made what, to me, has been the most telling comment of all.

I'm paraphrasing, but he said it's important to him for his mom to be able to watch him play.

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
