    ...with apologies to Andy Garcia...

Well, I'm finally going on my first real vacation without my parents, and my wife and I have decided to give New Orleans a run...anything to do there besides the French Quarter and Bourbon Street?

Of course, I'll HAVE to see if this whole beignets/coffee thing is all it's cracked up to be...Anybody know where the best beignets are? Hell, does anybody even know how to SPELL "beignets"?

I'll probably check out a Zephyrs game, also...

    thanks in advance...

I just spent this past weekend there. I had fun....don't get me wrong.....but you guys are going there at the worst time. The only reason we went is because we coupled it with the Eagles concert in Biloxi.

If you think Houston is hot and humid right now....buddy....you ain't seen nothing yet.

And at night....the wind stops and it gets even worse. Still, you can walk from bar to bar and cool off. Cafe Dumond is the place you go to for Coffee and beignets. It's along the river near Jackson square. Right before you leave, you should go by Central Grocery and get a muffalletta for the trip home.

Plan to put on about ten pounds between the food and drink....though you'll sweat it all off in about an hour.

The best restaurant I've been too there in a long time is Mr. B's Bistro.

Of course, Pat O's and Bourban street have to be seen. Another problem with the oppressive heat is that beer and drink mixers end up in the street and then go sour. IT STINKS!!

Try Napoleans for lunch...a really old building with courtyard specializing in Muffaletta sandwiches, cheap with atmosphere. Ask anyone in the Quarters where it is.

Weaving from Bourbon to Decateur Street is a nice afteroon thing to do with shops...Decateur is where Cafe Dumond is. You really won't have much of a hard time finding fun things to do just be walking around.

Nighttime Jazz within walking distance (edge of Quarters), try The Funky Butt. You can get some cheap food their too.

For an afternoon out of the Quarters, The Garden District is a nice drive. or you can take the trolley. The whole trolley ride to Tulane is pretty cool. You can stop midway at a hotel in a beatiful colonial-style house called The Columns Hotel. It has huge, HUGE white column at least 8 ft in diameter. They serve drinks on their patio. That's really laid back for winding down. Magazine Street is a nice area of eclectic shops and galleries for an afternoon walk.

For great Cajun/Creole, my experience you have to get out of the French Quarter or go to one of its 5 stars, the lessor French Quarter Cajun is poor tourist food. Those 5 stars are damn sure worth it, but you want something more for the locals and reasonable...there is one near Tulane.

    <a href="http://neworleans.citysearch.com/profile/4430740/">Jacques IMO's Cafe</a>

This is pretty famous. You can ask anyone about it.

There is a long, long wait there...did I say a long wait. I'd recommend going early evening. Reservations are not allowed.

i was born in New Orleans!

people are right, Cafe Dumond is the place for beignets.

you gotta go to Harrah's casino (smack in the middle of town!)

the ferry rides along the gulf are nice.

there's a nice flea market near Cafe Dumond that sells dirt cheap trinkets, that's always nice

there's also a cool mall around the corner...

don't get sucked into the hustlers and 3 card monte! I did one year during Mardi Gras... I lost $100 and my girlfriend lost $60! boy were we depressed after that... until a friend handed me another brewsky, that is! :D

Try to go see some music at the Original Tipitina's in the Garden District. Another fun place is the Rock -n- Bowl, a combination music club and bowling alley in Metarie.

I remember when I was in New Orleans in 1989, it snowed on Christmas. That was the first time it had snowed there in 25 years.
