Tell Your Boss: A Nap Could Save Money on Health Care

It’s just after the noon hour and it seems that some of you are still … awake. You need to take a nap!!

What’s that? Some of you are working? O.K., well, e-mail or print out this blog post for your boss-type person.

Are you reading now, boss-person? O.K., listen up …

You’ve got to let your employee here take a nap this afternoon — and every afternoon, see, because new research indicates that a few midday winks are heart-healthy — especially for men.

Don’t take our word for it. It comes right from The Associated Press:

In the largest study to date on the health effects of napping, researchers tracked 23,681 healthy Greek adults for an average of about six years. Those who napped at least three times weekly for about half an hour had a 37 percent lower risk of dying from heart attacks or other heart problems than those who did not nap.

Most participants were in their 50’s, and the strongest evidence was in working men, according to the study, which appears in Monday’s issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

The researchers said naps might benefit the heart by reducing stress, and jobs are a common source of stress.

Now, we know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, “Fine, I’ll put the men to bed for an hour and use the women like mules.” But that won’t do, boss, ’cause the study’s senior author, Dr. Dimitrios Trichopoulos, said it was likely that women would reap similar benefits from napping. It’s just that, well, not enough of them died during the study to be sure.

(Heart problems killed 48 women during the study, six of them working women, compared with 85 men, including 28 working men, the Associated Press noted.)

The researchers even factored for other behaviors, like diet, exercise and smoking — and still found that napping made a difference.

So, you know, c’mon, slave-driver — how ’bout it? The employee who has shared this blog with you has armed you with hard science, man. Good stuff. Healthy stuff. Now why not send them off for a quick siesta, as a reward? And don’t go denying yourself the benefits of this research, either, chief.

In fact, given our poor diet, lack of exercise and relentless smoking, we think it’s imperative that we get a good nap each afternoon as well.
