Suggestions, Opinions and Resumes

    Hello everyone. Would like some opinions as always on a new site.

    My wife is in start-up mode for a new business. She was a journalism major in college and has written resumes and cover letters for friends and family for years not realizing she could actually get paid for them!

    Anyway, I'm putting the finishing touches on the site and I wanted some opinions on the layout.

    Also, she wants to do some start-up resumes that she could use as examples on the site and as references. She would change all the names, etc to protect people but she wants to have some template examples for people and it is easier if she has a REAL person to work with instead of Bob Smith from Anytown, USA. (No offense, Bob :) ).

    Anyway, if anyone here or your friends need a high-quality, professional resume, she is willing to them for $30 for 15 people (enough to make a good list of templates). She already has a couple of people but I figured I'd let you guys know here in case anyone is interested.

    With as many sites as you keep putting up and as good looking as they are, why don't you get into Web design?! lol. Or do you already do that for a living, too? :)

    That is a sweet design Jeff.
    I really dig the blurred cityscape for the background. The ancient typewriter is a really nice touch.

    I really like the way the page is laid out.
    The tabs and side bar look really sharp.
    Colors are good too!

    So is this about resume's and vodka? Maybe Absolut will do a partnership with ya? Y'all can do resume's for bartenders and drunks!?? j/k :D

    Is not very professional sounding, nor does it require great writing ability. I am really disappointed.

    This is funny because I recently did a search for someone's name and one of the links was to a feedback page for a resume and cover letter writing service. I did not even know such things existed.

    If she wants a challenge, I can send my info and she can attempt to make me look desireable in "the real world" instead of the limited academic. :)

    rimbaud: The funny thing is that my wife did a TON of research into this business and found that the vast majority of services consisted of...

    1. Poor quality resumes
    2. High prices
    3. Both

    There are some very cheap resume services that aren't very good and some very expensive services that are decent but, in Houston, most of them are just expensive and bad.

    A friend of mine paid $600 for his and it was an absolute piece of crap!

    The good thing about the business is that it is good no matter what the economy. Employment high? Employees are in demand and are looking for "free agent deals". Employment low? Everybody needs a resume to get back to work. :)

    Sorry, I'm morally against resume writing services :)

    I consider bad resume writing excellent weed out criteria. Helps get rid of some of the weirdos. I once saw an 8 page resume that included height, weight, and some other physical attributes at the end (for a desk job). Needless to say, if this person had used a resume service they would have received an interview because their basic experience was good. Without the writing service, we were able to nip it in the bud!

    ...just kidding, everyone needs help sometimes... but the little anecdote is true.

    Doc: And you think that just came from an employee??? Actually, my wife has quite a few "best" resume books and so many of them are HORRIBLE. There was one listed as a "best" resume that was for a hair stylist that actually had a clip art picture of an African American woman on the resume.

    My wife used post-it notes on different pages to mark one's she thought looked ok or bad and the one on that page said, "worst resume ever." :)
