signing a job offer a contract?

    i mentioned before that i was going through an interview process. today i got the phone call and an offer. i verbally accepted it. i will get the paper works next week. so i was planning on signing the paper before i negotiate with my current employer. but then someone told me that, by signing the offer, it's a contract. so i have to go. is that true? what should i do? thanks.

    im not sure. i recently was in a similar circumstance. I verbally commited but was still had a couple of other offers pending.

    I don't think it would be a huge deal to break the contract once you signed...i dont think they would sue you or whatever. Obviously, its a crappy thing to do but i don't know how much consequences there would be...besides never working for that company again

    If you accept the offer, take it. If you try to stay at your current company, it often backfires when you hang around for a year then they lay you off.

    what kind of job is this? a contract job or full time?

    Why do you want to negotiate with your current employer? Do you really want to stay there?

    That offer isn't a contract; it's just legality that you were offered the job.The only thing you lose is your credibility with that company who offered. There could be a small chance that the people who personally met you during the interview process could be friends with other people you might have to deal with in the future, but really most of the time you're just another nameless face who interviewed for a spot; unless you were interviewing for a VP spot.

    it's a full time job.

    i'm not sure if i want to stay at current company. but i was thinking about having them match the offer, and the new company will increase a bit more. but i don't want get burnt either. so.

    I verbally committed and signed papers before and never showed up because of a better opportunity. What are they gonna do sue you? Bring on a disgruntled employee? Yea right. You hold all the bargaining chips.
