I have a home, wireless network setup between my desktop PC and a few laptops. The desktop is setup with several different folders which I setup for sharing and are accessed through My Network Places on my laptop. Yesterday, when I opened My Network Places and clicked on one of these folders to open it they all vanished. The icon for My Network Places also disappeared on my Start menu on the right side where icons for My Documents, My Computer, My Recent Documents, etc. are also located. I still can access My Network Places by going to My Computer and then clicking My Network Places on the left side of the screen but again the folder is blank and has none of the shared folders from the desktop in it. So, does anybody have any clues of what could have went wrong and caused this? Does anybody have any ideas of how to fix this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.
try "view workgroup computers" to see if you can view your desktop and the shared folders if they don't show up, check to make sure both your laptop and your desktop have the same workgroup name
OK, here is something that may help in finding the problem out. Oh yeah let me list the specs: Both machines are running XP Pro, My Network Places had been running fine for the past few month before I started this thread. I am on broadband (cable). I am using a wireless network setup. I have three account on my PC, let's call them A, B, and Guest. For some reason my desktop keeps locking my account, A. My account is administrator level. When I reset my PC it loads back up and then it has Administrator account, account B, and Guest account but not my account, A. I have also noticed that I am not able to do anything through the network like print and the like. I have checked my network settings and my WORKGROUP name matches on both computers and everything else looks OK. Any ideas?
You got a machine with a firewall? Try disabling the XP Windows Firewall either from the control panel's "Security Center" applet or the services applet.
Don't know if this helps out but I looked at my Network Connection on my desktop. The icon for the Local Area Connection states that it is connected and firewalled but at the top of the icon there is a little lock. I have included a picture for reference. Anybody have any clues???
Dude. Didn't I just say TURN OFF the firewall? Right click the icon, select properties. In the ADVANCED TAB, click firewall.
