    D'oh!

[rquoter]John McCain may lag in money, but RNC out-raises the DNC by 5 times

Led by chairman Mike Duncan, the Republican National Committee ended May with 13 times more money in the bank than its Democratic counterpart and raised five times as much money in the same time frame.

As The Times' campaign finance guru Dan Morain points out, the sums are significant as presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain squares off against the far more richly funded Sen. BaraRepublican National Committee chairman Mike Duncan who's leading a successful fundraising drive for GOP presidential nominee John McCainck Obama for the last 136 days of the general election campaign.

Based on the numbers so far, the Republican Party appears poised to act as the financial equalizer in the fall campaign. The RNC disclosed that it ended May with $53.5 million in the bank, compared to $3.9 million for the Democratic National Committee, which is headed by Howard Dean.

Thanks to the continuing GOP popularity and fundraising attraction of President Bush, the RNC continued to vastly out-raise the Democratic Party, amassing $24.4 million just in May.

Of that, it raised $7.1 million in small donations of $200 or less, the so-called unitemized receipts. The RNC raised more in small increments than the DNC’s total take in May of $4.8 million.

McCain himself reported raising slightly more than $21 million on his own, roughly the same as Obama, whose monthly money haul fell by $11 million in May.

Now that Obama has rescinded his signed promise to accept public funds, he's hoping for a substantial dollar boost from onetime supporters of his opponent, Sen. Hillary Clinton.[/rquoter]

McCain will be depending on the RNC to help him out. One thing I can see being a problem is if the GOP determines the money would be better spent on Senate and House races, McCain may not see much benefit.

    That's the issue:

At the end of May, the DCCC had $45.3 million on hand to spend on House seats, the NRCC had $6.7 million on hand. On the Senate side, the DSCC had $37 million on hand to the NRSC's $19.4 million.

Much of the money the DNC has taken in over recent years has gone to build and improve organizations in all 50 states. Now that the primary is over, look for the DNC to start picking up a bit more money.

Meanwhile, the RNC has to make some tough calls between helping McCain or helping stem the Dem tide in Congress. I suspect they'll go for McCain, since he has a better chance of beating Obama than the absolute zero chance Repubs have of taking back the Senate or House. That means there will be a lot of ticked off Repub pols across the country.

For the GOP, spending money on congressional and senate contests isn't about winning either chamber in this election. It's about 2010 & 2012. Because of their 6 year term, Senate seats are VERY precious. Unless they are ultimate pessimists, Republicans should believe they have a good chance of capturing the Senate by 2012 because so many Dem seats will be up for re-election.

What I'm saying is the temptation to target winnable Senate seats (and maybe some key districts in the House) with RNC money will be very hard to resist unless the GOP concludes that spending it on McCain will put him over the hump. Kind of like a "double or nothing" bet. In the unlikely event McCain is far behind in the polls, the effect would be magnified.

DSCC vs. NRSC? I recall dems almost doubling up on the reps earlier in the year, anyone have a recent number on the debts/raised/funds-on-hand?

I don't think fundraising will be a problem for the Dems this year. The DNC will have plenty of time to make this up, and less holes to fill compared to the RNC since individual candidates as well as the DSCC and DSCC are out-raising their Republican counterparts.

Of course, money doesn't decide elections, but it certainly plays a part.

    http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/rnc-raised-24.4-million-nrcc-struggle-continues-2008-06-20.html

The Republican National Committee (RNC) raked in $24.4 million in May, according to a report filed Friday, while the party’s House committee saw its cash on hand decline for the second straight month.

The RNC continues to do its best to make up for lagging House and Senate committees, as well as Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) fundraising disadvantage in the presidential race.

It outraised its Democratic counterpart by about $15 million in April and will almost certainly come out on top by a large margin again, though no May figures are yet available for the Democratic National Committee (DNC).

The RNC spent $11.5 million and saw its cash on hand go up to $53.5 million. The DNC had just $4.4 million in cash at the end of April.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), meanwhile, continues to struggle with funds. It raised $4.9 million and spent $5.1 million in May, seeing its cash on hand decrease slightly to less than $6.7 million.

Stuck in the middle of an expensive fraud investigation into a former treasurer, the NRCC already saw its cash on hand decline by about $500,000 during the month of April.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has yet to report May numbers.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) continued its fundraising dominance over the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) in May, but Republicans did close the cash gap slightly.

The DSCC outraised the NRSC $5.9 million to $4.9 million, but the NRSC spent more than $2 million less, $5 million to $2.7 million.

The DSCC maintains a nearly two-to-one advantage in cash, though, with $38.5 million to the NRSC’s $21.6 million.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall in the room where the RNC is debating how to spend their cash. One thing you can count on... they are being bombarded with calls from Republicans in Congress howling for money. I really have to question just how much of this will go to McCain's campaign. The GOP's House and Senate campaigns are going to have to raise a heck of a lot more bread for McCain to get most of the RNC cash. Now, they just might, so the Obama money raising juggernaut needs to stay on its amazing record breaking pace.

    Impeach Bush.

I don't know anything about political fundraising, but are there limits to how much a person can donate to a party itself like the RNC or DNC? I mean can a corporation donate 1M to a political party itself?

Doesn't this alone justify Obama's decision to forego public financing? He has to balance out the gap in the RNC - DNC fundraising levels.
