    Is there any free software that allows to capture sound using my microphone installed on my laptop? There used to be one on Windows 2000, but I dont see it anymore on XP.

    I have Sound Recorder on my Xp under Start>>Accessories. Maybe you just missed it?

    Windows Movie Maker (Under Accessories or Entertainment program group) will allow you to save in WMA.
