I have this gf who has suddenly decided to make alot of calls to Asia. Like each time the call runs up like $15.00 or so.

Is there any cheap phone plan service that allows someone to use their PC to call a regular phone line.

I know about Skype and all. The people oversees don't use Skype, so its not an option for me. I tried googling this but all I was overwhelmed with company after company.

Is there any company which you would recommend? What hardware do I have to buy to use this service?

    Thanks.

    1) The people overseas should download Skype.
    2) If the people overseas cannot download Skype, your girlfriend could use SkypeOut. That way, she uses Skype and they use a normal phone, and the rates should generally be lower than if she calls them using a normal phone herself.
    3) Check out VOIPbuster.

The Koreans I work with in Seoul regularly use SKYPE to call Australia and the United States. Is it just a personal preference that the folks oversees don't use SKYPE or do they have problems with it?

I don't know man...my mom and her family (in Japan) all use Skype...religiously.

The problem is the people she calls are not people who do much work with the computer.

Plus the connection speeds are slow often times oversees. Don't you need a fast internet connection on both ends for skype to skype to work?

a company called vtx will allow you to call for 3.5 cents a min in US or to China but I am not sure if they give you the same rates for other asian countries.

Aren't phone cards as bad as the rates offered by the big telecom companies anyways? I've heard of people getting suckered out of minutes from their calling card for connection fees and such. I've never used a calling card, but I guess I'll look into that too.

I just naturally assumed VOIP technology was the cheapest method around.

No, phone cards are good and incredibly cheap if you use the right ones.

For instance, check out this one:

    http://www.phonecardforsale.com/

They are not gimmicks. I use them all the time.

You're right. These prices are 50% cheaper than VOiP. Thanks.
