Parents upset after teachers' prank goes too far

    By NATALIA MIELCZAREK
    Staff Writer

MURFREESBORO — Parents of students at a Murfreesboro elementary school are outraged that teachers and an assistant principal staged a phony gun attack on their children, telling them repeatedly it was not a drill, while the children cried and took shelter under tables.

Sixty-nine sixth-grade students from Scales Elementary school were on a weeklong trip at Fall Creek Falls, a state park about 130 miles southeast of Nashville. On Thursday, the last night of the outing, the staff played a prank on the kids, convincing them there was a gunman on the loose.

A teacher wearing a hooded sweatshirt pulled on a locked door, pretending to be a suspicious subject in the area.

The students were told to lie on the floor or crawl underneath tables and keep quiet. The lights went out, and about 20 kids started to cry, 11-year-old Shay Naylor said. Some held hands and shook.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God,’ ” Shay said Saturday afternoon as she recounted the incident. “At first I thought I was going to die. We flipped out. (A teacher) told us, ‘We just got a call that there’s been a random shooting.’ I was freaked out. I thought it was serious.”

Some parents said Saturday they were outraged, especially in light of the April 16 shootings at Virginia Tech that left 33 students and professors dead, including the gunman.

Scales Elementary Principal Catherine Stephens held a meeting Saturday afternoon at the school to discuss the matter with a handful of concerned parents who contacted school officials Friday night.

She said she was saddened by the situation and that the school was handling it, though she declined to elaborate on whether the teachers involved would face disciplinary action.

    ‘Poor judgment’ blamed
Assistant Principal Don Bartch, who led the trip, said the entire scenario lasted about five minutes, after which the teachers gathered the students and explained it was a prank.

“We got together and discussed what we would have done in a real situation,” he said.

Several parents said they were troubled by the staff’s poor judgment.

“The children were in that room in the dark, begging for their lives, because they thought there was someone with a gun after them,” said Brandy Cole, whose son went on the trip.

“This was not a good experience,” said Alisha Graves, whose son attended. “Those kids were crying, and they were terrified.”

Brandy Cole said she found out about the incident shortly after her son returned home from the trip Friday afternoon.

“I was shocked,” said Cole, whose husband, Jimmy, immediately sent an e-mail requesting a meeting with Bartch.

Barbara Corbetta, whose child also went to Fall Creek Falls with the group, said she spoke to several different parents and kept hearing the same details — kids on the floor crying and begging for their lives.

“The circumstance that occurred involved poor judgment,” Stephens said. “My hope is that we can learn from this, and in the end, it will have a positive result of growth for all of us.”

Shay and her mother, Niki Morris, said they forgave the teachers and wanted to move on. It “went too far because it was too gruesome,” Shay said. “You’d think a teacher wouldn’t do it, but they did. But they’re great teachers. If (the assistant principal) loses his job, I will break into tears. He’s the best assistant principal I’ve ever had.”

Kathryn Sherrod, a Midstate psychologist who works with children, said she can see how kids could be traumatized by this, especially in light of the Virginia Tech shootings.

“That’s too close to real,” she said. “It’s important for teachers and school administrators to realize they have a degree of trust with children. When you play a prank of that nature, you run the risk of losing that trust.”

two thoughts about it, both conflicting...

    1) kids need to be prepared to deal with this. no drills can substitute for the experience they gained...

    or

    2) just complete lack of thoughtfulness on this.

like I said, two ways to look at it, I lean more towards second one but I can see the other viewpoint also.

This sounds like a bit from the Phil Hendrie show. Only difference being that it's actually TRUE.

this happens all the time. the feds or local authorities will do mock terrorism drills where they come in and point guns at kids screaming "were homeschoolers and were going to kill everyone!" sometimes they even throw fake blood all around to make it more real. kids end up getting so scared that the pee their pants.

its happened a bunch over the last few years. do a google search - you will find several similar stories.

but i guess we need stuff like this in a post 9/11 world.

What the HELL is wrong with these people?

And they are supposed to be teaching our kids, yet are this FRICKEN stupid?

Just talk to the kids, have a drill, where they KNOW it is a drill if you have to....but to stage something like this...

I would be up in the principals office, and voices would NOT be muffled.

I'd like to see them do that in DC, where they're likely to get shot.

You know what I think? I think we should give these teachers guns so they can fight back when the real thing happens. I think that's a terrific idea. It would have been a lot more fun for the kids if there had been some real guns laying around.

are you're referring to the one where some conservatives got mad at the govt for doing the drill which they used "homeschoolers" instead of terrorists?

I think that was a planned drill which the students and/or parents knew about though. In this one, noone knew it was a drill cept the teachers.

The problem is that since they didn't tell them it was a drill what if a real shooting happens and the kids don't react until its too late because they think its another prank.

I think this was stupid. Having a drill for a shooter to me seems a bit paranoid given that school shootings are still very rare but I guess it doesn't hurt to be prepared but doing it as a prank is stupid. Especially since these are elementary school kids who don't have that much understanding.

there is more than one instance. and i dont think getting mad about this is exclusive to "conservatives". or is this like how you said only "liberals" are upset w/ perry's forced vaccinations law?

i dont know which one you are refering to, but there have been drills where everyone knows what is going on. but many happen where the kids have no clue.

based on many of the incidents ive read about, they dont tell the kids or the parents and the teachers are only notified right before it happens.

there are some instances where the whole thing is staged and everyone knows about it, students included, but most ive read about are made to totally suprise the students.

the links to the articles are dead (why does that always happen w/ stories like this?), but this story details more of this kind of stuff. it is "prison planet" so take it for what it is, but i have no reason to think that they would make up AP articles and the quotes from them.

    http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/november2006/011106terrorizeschool.htm

"A school safety drill that included police officers in riot gear with weapons has caused concern among some parents who say it was too realistic and frightened some students."

"Students, who were unaware police were conducting a drill, were taken from the classroom into the halls, patted down by officers and asked what they had in their pockets, the newspaper said."

"Some of these kids were so scared, they just about wet their pants," said Marge Bradshaw, a parent with four children in Godfrey-Lee Schools. "I think it's pure wrong that the students and parents were not informed of this."

The students were not told that the drill was about to take place and the teachers were given just a moments notice.

This follows an incident in early October where another Michigan school was locked down for hours after a teenager was seen in the woods wearing a Halloween mask.

The raid is similar to past examples such as Goose Creek South Carolina (video below), where armed police raided a high school with weapons drawn supposedly in search of drugs. Shouting officers aimed guns at students heads as they were ordered face-up against the wall, then into Guantanamo style squats as they were handcuffed and K9 dogs sniffed their backpacks.

No drugs were found and the Goose Creek Police Department, the city, as well as the Berkeley County School District had to pay $1.6 million for violating the rights of nearly 150 students caught in the raid. The three had to sign a consent decree barring similar activities in future but it included a waver where probable cause or voluntary consent could be cited to conduct further raids.

Footage from other school raid drills where police in riot gear point MP5's at students is included in the footage below, taken from Alex Jones' 9/11: The Road To Tyranny. FBI storm troopers in black uniforms and helmets scream and cuss at children in one instance before loading them on buses and taking them to a local jail. In Fort Worth Texas, the cop of the year was shot in the head by one of his own officers in another school drill.

Also highlighted is the Heartland Christian Academy school siege where CPS and police kidnapped hundreds of children without a warrant. Watch in horror as children filled with terror are forcibly dragged from their screaming mothers and loaded onto prison buses.

A federal judge later barred CPS from removing children from the school in future but vaguely defined provisions remained in place where it could be justified.

In September 2004, the Muskegon Chronicle reported on a drill that revolved around a mock terrorist attack on a Michigan school bus. The terrorist group were labeled, "Wackos Against Schools and Education who believe everyone should be homeschooled."

The mock attack was funded by a Homeland Security grant and required the participation of students to act bloody and injured, also involving hospitals, morgues and mannequins painted up to look like dead children, as parents were ordered to dash to emergency rooms frantic in the belief that their child had perished.

The Muskegon Area Intermediate School District later had to apologize for characterizing homeschoolers as terrorists after hundreds of complaints poured in.
