So.....whenever I travel to the home office in Stamford, CT., we always eat at this little Italian restaurant downtown, and I always have Osso Bucco. I've had it elsewhere, but they make the best I've ever had. Anyway, I decided a few months back to try and duplicate it at home, and I pretty much nailed it on the first try. Just about freaked myself out it was so good. Anyway, I've been getting my veal shanks at Central market, and of course, they're wonderful......but should a cut of meat that's mostly bone cost ten bucks a pound? Perhaps I'm just ignorant because I've never had a need to buy veal shanks before, but I'm guessing I could probably beat that price. Does anyone have any recommendations on where I could get some good veal shank at a decent price? I haven't found it at any of the regular grocery stores down here south of the loop.
Belden's on Chimney Rock and South Braeswood. They usually have lamb shanks for a decent price. Another place that does is the Kroger at South Post Oak and West Bellfort. Either place will be about half the cost of Central Market. EDIT: Eeek! Just saw you were using veal. Veal shanks are tougher to find than lamb shanks. I would still call Belden's...they sell veal and could cut you a deal on shanks. I would also try Rice Epicurean at Holcombe and Kirby.
