There is an aesthetic principle at large, whereby scientific theories are chosen according to their beauty, or simplicity. These then must be tested by experiment -- the surprising thing is that the aesthetic quality of a theory is often a good predictor of that theory's explanatory and predictive power. This situation is summed up by William de Ockham ``Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily'' known as Ockam's Razor. I've heard so much about Ockam's Razor lately that I felt compelled to look it up on google.com and find out for myself what all the talk was about! Well there it is and not one damn word about Yao! I'm starting to wonder if Ockman has even seen Yao Ming play I'm starting to think that this theory falls in line with your basic theory about the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Or that the Shortest distance between the ball and the rim is when it is in the hands of a 7'5" tall Chinese player. I have also started to debate the Kevin Costner theory of if you build it they will come. As in, Build a new arena and the tallest Chinese basketball player in the world will come. Well we are only half way through and he is already on his way. I think I am starting to see the light!
so they named it after him but chose not to spell it the same way. that's some serious lack of respect.
So we're going to secretly clone 2 Hakeem Olajuwons, 1 Larry Bird, and 2 Michael Jordans under the new arena and in 20 years unveil them to the world and win the finals for 20 years straight?
Hell..we dont need him to...Bird can play point-forward. Btw...why dont we clone Wilt while we are at it. 1 Hakeem and 1 Wilt. Damn...what a team!
1. Possible stress fractures related to his size. 2. Steve and Cat have expressed little faith in him. 3. The Chinese government may prove to be very difficult to deal with. 4. The Shanghi Sharks may prove to be very difficult to deal with. 5. Will he be available for offseason work outs? Is picking Yao really the simplest solution? Wouldn't it be easier to just by pass all of that bs and just go with some other comodities that are better known to us. I find myself going back and forth on the issue of drafting Yao but if we apply the theory of Ockam's Razor then the simplest solution no longer seems to be "drafting Yao".
If we do then I will be as big of a Yao Ming supporter as there is on this board. And I will hope all of the other bs is just that...bs.
crash - Is the solution still simple when we ponder the following: 1) Does Odom still smoke pot? 2) If the answer to #1 is "yes" then will he get caught again and/or influence MoT negatively? 3) Has Odoms wrist healed adequately? 4) How good can the Rockets be aquiring the PF (Taylor) & SF from a Clipps team that went 15-67? 5) After "suggesting" and aquiring Odom, do Cat & Steve think they run the team? 6) Are the Rockets a basketball team or a "clique"? 6) Is there enough ball to go around? 7) Are Cato, Collier, MoT (if here), EG, & KT (if here) enough low post presence to win? 8) Should there be concerns that Odom is a career 31% 3pt shooter? IMO, Ming is the most simplistic choice...draft him and take what you get.
1. I hope not but I don't know. This is more managable than the possabilities of Yao having stress fracture problems or dealing with the Chinese government or the Shanghi Sharks or missing all of the off season programs. 2. Same answer as 1. 3. There is no road block to sending players (including Odom) thru a physical but will we be allowed to give Yao a physical before we spend the #1 on him? 4. Taylor and Odom were both pups that year with no other help. They were options 1 and 2 on that team. They would be options 3 and 4 at best on this years Rockets. Taylor may not even be a starter if Eddie is ready. 5. Who cares what they think if they are happy. All that really matters is that Rudy T and CD get the person that they think is best for the team. If that also happens to be the person that Francis and Cat like then all the better. 6. I would hope both. The closer players are the more time they spend together and time spent together helps develope chemistry. Chemistry makes teams better...usually. 7. Probably not but that depends on the growth of Eddie Griffin and who the Rocks would select at 8, 12 and 15. Adding Borchardt would certainly help this year and adding Hilario or Stoudemire could prove huge a couple of years down the road. Imagine a front court of: Starters: C - Stoudemire PF - Griffin SF - Odom If Stoudemire turns in to the low post stud that can rebound, block shots and play defense like some experts beleive then watch out. Now imagine the following players off of the bench: Bench: C - Borchardt PF - MoT SF - TMo I think we all beleive that Griffin will be a stud in the next year or two at PF and if Stoudemire could develope into and aggresive 6'11" to 7' stud in the paint then that would be an awesome front court. Borchardt and TMo can both bring shotblocking and defense off of the bench while MoT and Borchardt both bring offense. Both starters and bench players could block tons of shots. I would take my chanses with that front court turning into one of the NBA's best.
*edit* LOL I'm making comparisons I shouldn't be as I'm comparing picks that don't go together . Wilcox and Stoudemire are in 2 different pick ranges. I wasn't thinking. I'd go with Wilcox at 8 if at all possible, Hilario at 12, and Nachbar at 15 if we could pull it off. If Wilcox isn't there at 8, I'd say the options are Borchardt, Woods, or Tskit; There's no viable other viable center worthy of the #8 so its the man from stanford or a Small Forward. If we had the 12, I'd go for Nene, and the 15 would depend on which position we filled at the 8, if we got Borchardt I'd go with Nachbar or maybe Chris Jeffries. If we got a SF at 8, Stoudemire or Ely would be good pickups. One of the 2 should still be there. I'm not sure how viable getting odom and their 2 picks is though. But given that situation that's what I'd go for.
