Nintendo Raises Profit Projections as First-Quarter Sales Surge

9.27 million Wii sales worldwide, 47.27 million DS sales

Nintendo has increased shipment forecasts for Nintendo Wii and DS by millions of units each after its consolidated first-quarter results saw massive growth in sales.

Net income rose to 80.3 billion yen (GBP 325 million) from 15.5 billion yen in the comparable period last year.

The company raised its full-year net income projection to 245 billion yen (GBP 993 million) - a leap of 40 percent.

Nintendo now expects to ship 16.5 million Wii consoles (up from 14 million) for the fiscal year ending March 31st, 2008, while DS supply is being increased to 26 million from 22 million.

The pattern is also reflected in software supply, with Nintendo increasing the Wii software unit forecast to 72m from 55m and DS software to 140 million from 130 million.

Worldwide Wii sales have reached 9.27 million units as of the end of June 2007, the company said, while DS sales (including DS Lite) are at 47.27 million.

The company attributed the revisions to "robust sales of Wii and Nintendo DS".

Nintendo's plans for the rest of 2007 include the launch of highly anticipated Metroid and Mario titles for Wii, while a new Mario Kart title and Wii Fit are likely to arrive within its financial year.

I took this from a European site, so there aren't any USD amounts here and I'm too lazy to put them in myself. Basically, Nintendo made a lot of money.

I can post some software sales, software/hardware ratios (per region), and hardware sales per region if people are interested. Or I could just post a link to a little PDF file at Nintendo's web site.

Good news. I'm glad Nintendo is being rewarded with profits from the Wii. Instead of just following industry trends and focusing on more pixels, more explosions, Nintendo has focused on user interface and the "fun" factor, and it's paying off.

65-year-old retirees at my church are getting together to have weekly Wii parties. How many of those folks would be playing XBox or PS3? Nintendo has tapped into a video game audience that has been neglected since the days of the Atari: full grown adults.

Xbox 360 is addressing us old gamers by Xbox arcade. The ability to play Street Fighter 2 Turbo online and having games where you can see realtime leaderboards for such games as Dig Dug is great. Also you can play mutliplayer DOOM on xbox live. I know Wii allows you to download old Genesis and SNES games, which is cool.

Its about the old school.

thats pretty cool. I've read a few articles of hospitals using them in rehab for certain people.

But its good to see a new and risky idea succeed, rather than the same old thing with a faster processor and sharper graphics.
