Okay first off, I don't know a damn thing about cars. I got my front brake pads replaced last night, and now when I come to a complete stop, there is a grinding noise, or like something is being gripped tightly. I don't hear this noise at all when breaking at highway speeds or when I don't have to come to a complete stop. Do i have to wait for them to adjust or something since they are new? Could there be another problem? I also heard something about rotors. Unfortunately the place I went to is closed by 6 pm and that's the time I always get out of work this week so is it safe to drive for a week? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks
Not that I know a lot about cars, but if you're hearing a metal-on-metal sound, then braking is probably scratching the rotor. Do that too long and you'd have to replace the rotor. I would try to get an answer sooner rather than later.
You might have a problem with your brake calipers. Also, on a side note, if you don't know **** about cars, why is your username that of a car?? Just curious, not hatin.
heh, good question. I couldn't come up with anything more creative. Damn, hopefully this doesn't turn into me having to spend a ton of money.
Sometimes when brakes are changed, there is an adjustment period... but it shouldn't last more than a day or two. It could be any number of things. Could be that the caliphers were not adjusted properly. It could be that your previous brake pads destroyed your rotors (scratched them up). You can go to any brake place and ask for an estimate and they should be able to tell you what the problem is if there is one. You might want to do that prior to going to the place that changed your pads, so that they don't lie to you. Could also be that you have a fluid blockage. If your car is still making the same noise by tomorrow night... then I would worry. Also, pay attention and make sure your brakes are still stopping well.
Where did you get them changed? I would think most professionals would look for rotor damage as it would be more work/pay for them, so I doubt that's the issue. You should probably just google around.
Some place called Twin Star Lube, yeah i was assuming that if the rotors were bad, they would tell me. Well Google seems to indicate its the rotors. I just don't trust any mechanics, I feel like they're willing to tell you something is wrong with your ride just so they can make a quick buck, and I've heard horror stories about taking your car to "Just brakes" so I'm not too sure of a reputable place
You could try looking at the rotors, i think they should be partly visible where you can check for damage. If there was no noise before replacing them, i would think the rotors are ok and the noise is just the pads breaking in
