HOUSTON -- Rick Adelman admitted at the start that it was going to be a different kind of training camp and season.

As different as Marge Simpson and every other Playboy cover girl.

A year ago at this time, the Rockets were on the cusp of a regular season in which they thought of themselves as one of the NBA teams with a realistic chance to win a championship.

Now they think of themselves as one of the NBA teams.

A year ago at this time, Adelman was drawing up plays and plotting strategies to see how to get the most out of the combined talents of Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady and Ron Artest.

Now the only way Adelman can see Yao, T-Mac and Ron-Ron in Rockets red is in quickly evaporating memories.


But it's still coaching and that's one of the things that Adelman does as well as any of his peers, even if he often flies well beneath the radar. He's 12th on the all-time win list among NBA coaches with 860 and ranks fifth in winning percentage (.616) among active coaches. He's coached 18 seasons in the league and missed the playoffs only twice.

"You have a job to do," Adelman said. "Sometimes you have certain teams that maybe they're not as talented as other teams, but you certainly can get just as much out of it as a coach.
