a buddy of mine, and former boss, just launched his music-centric social networking site, mog.com. download a little app, for mac or PC, and it tracks your listening habits, publishes them, allows you to comment, hooks you up with others you share similar listening tastes- manny, you'd be a natural mogger!

    cnet has a little story:

A test version of the niche social networking site MOG.com launched on Tuesday with the aim of hooking up people based on their taste in music--a sort of Myspace.com for music junkies.

The free site, started by former MTV marketing executive David Hyman with $1.4 million from private investors, requires users to download its application, MOG-O-MATIC.

The application catalogs the music on users' computer hard drives and monitors what they play the most and what new tunes are added through online downloads and portable music players.

The data is analyzed several ways and posted to users' MOG Web pages, which are open to inspection by the online world at large. Users also are encouraged to create their own blogs on their pages about their musical favorites.

"There are music lovers who want nothing more than to tell the world what they are listening to," MOG.com spokeswoman Dana Smith said. "This is really exciting to people who want to see what other people are listening to and to people who want to show off their stuff."

The company does not generate music recommendations from the data but does provide 30-second sound links to all users' collections as well as links to Apple Computer's iTunes Music Store and music e-tailer Amazon.com.

more from David, on the genesis behind the site:

    http://www.boingboing.net/2006/06/19/mog_social_networkin.html

"My friends and i always turn each other on to music. i wanted to automate the process of sharing what was in our collections and what we are listening to without having to do the work of typing it in.

What would you rather have on your TiVo? Tivo Suggestions or see what all your friends watched? What Jon Stewart watched? What Charlie Rose watched?

Friends and people you admire are the ultimate trusted voices. If you ask anyone where they discovered music lately, more often then not, it's their friends. More than MTV. More than Clear Channel. More than Amazon recommendations. FRIENDS."

You lost me at "buddy of mine, and former boss"... you can have either/or, but not both in one.

Anyway, does TiVo allow you to turn the usage reporting thing off?

I have a good friend that is a former boss. We became good friends while he was my boss, as a matter of fact. That all happened over 25 years ago. We're still buddies. For every so-called truism, you're going to find some exceptions. That's a truism! ;)
