Surely next season will be his last. Kinda surprised they're not letting him ride out to the tune of 25 mill

Yes, but it may be the right thing to do.

This might have something to do with trying to keep Noel. Maybe they need some cap space in order to offer him more money? Can someone enlighten me?

Mavs were looking at a payroll of $85 million next season by picking up Dirk's $25 million team option. You're right, they need money for Noel and their draft picks.

Also, Cuban might be planning another left-at-the-altar free agency splash!

I'm pretty sure Cuban will take care of Dirk. A wink-wink type of deal. Dirk retires, starts some business venture, Cuban offers to "help him out" with an investment or two.

Who really cares at this point? Dirk and Mark Cuban have been intertwined since Cuban purchased the Mavs way back when. Dirk is going to retire a Mav (which is good for him but not necessarily good for the team). If Dirk somehow takes only 12-15 million a year he would do the team some good allowing them to sign other players but I for one wouldn't take the bullet at this stage of his career. It's not like Dirk's team is a player from serious championship contention. He might as well ride out the money train as long as he can.

I can see it being a 3 year 10mil per year deal or something, that way when he retires he still gets his monies, just over a longer stretch than all at once.

    You mean 5/25?

Seriously though. They sign Dirk to a low salary, say $5 million, which he will do, and it does open up big cap room for them as long as Noel doesn't sign an offer sheet.

Lol decline on dirk while they paid parsons in full. Cuban should know that giving a good player the max doesnt make them great.

This is like Durant declining Warriors, but will re-sign at a later date. I hate ESPN, they made this news.

Dirk has to be the most loyal basketball player and person in pro sports.

Dude has been a legit franchise player and the face of the Mavericks for years.... he really is the best thing to ever happen to that franchise.
