LONDON (Reuters) - American illusionist David Blaine has shocked a group of journalists by appearing to cut off part of his ear at a news conference to promote a forthcoming stunt.
The daredevil U.S. magician apparently drew blood after he was asked whether he could show the assembled reporters any new tricks. He borrowed a pocket knife and screamed as he applied it to his left ear.

He left the room holding a bloodied handkerchief to his ear before reappearing and walking past journalists with his ear and the top of his shirt covered with what appeared to be blood.

The event was aimed at publicising Blaine's next major feat on September 5, when he will be suspended in a clear plexi-glass case by the River Thames for 44 days.

The 30-year-old New Yorker will be sealed in a space about seven feet (2.1 metres) high, seven feet long and three feet wide, hung from a crane near Tower Bridge.

Blaine will eat no food and will have one tube for water and another for urinating.

It will be his first major stunt outside the United States.

Previously he has been entombed in a block of ice for 61 hours, buried in a coffin for a week and spent 35 hours standing on top of an 80-foot pillar in Manhattan.

"I consider this to be the most difficult thing I'm ever going to do in my lifetime," he said.

Blaine will be allowed to take diapers, a journal, some pens, lip balm, a pillow and a pad to lie on into the box. He said he currently weighs about 205 pounds and expects to lose about 45 pounds during the stunt.

Last week Blaine marked his arrival in London by perching on the roof of a capsule of the London Eye -- the world's tallest Ferris wheel.

I think I remember seeing some show that revealed he obviously wasn't levitating and how he made it appear like he was. This guy is insane though, levitator or not - the stuff he's doing is amazing if he's not cheating and I don't see how it's magic either.

One of those magic tricks exposed shows explained how he did the block of ice thing. It was 2 guys, ie Blaine and a look a like and there was a little chamber underneath the ice with food and water and a matress or something. They would switch when the ice was being sprayed to keep it frozen since there would be a kind of steam that would block people's views and would make it hard to see the switch. This stuff isn't that amazing and it's kind of boring.

I like the guy. I watch "Street Magic" every time it comes on. He's actually an illusionist as opposed to a magician. No, he's not Houdini, but he's the closest thing we've got.

Oh, by the way. This is his girlfriend.....

It's not fair that Blaine gets criticism. He's just a magician. He's just an illusionist. No different than anyone else in the field. He's just a better entertainer than everyone else. And I guess that makes people jealous. But if you want to know how he got to the top. It was because he took the same tricks everyone has been doing for years and made them better. And that's the bottom line. He's the best entertainer in the business next to copperfield. All magicians do the same tricks. I'ts very rare somebody comes up with something brand new. Blaine is just better.

I've seen how the levitation works. It's not that complicated....I could do it if I tried hard enough.
