Honest question - not trying to sling mud. I recognize that most donations are being done without fanfare or media attention. I've just not heard about many *big* contributions from individuals with the means to do so.

Besides the precedence of the situation, donations are tax-deductable, and the upper brackets are always on the hook for at/almost/over 50% of their income. When a Stephon Marbury (very obviously and sincerely moved by this plight) gives a million dollars, I calculate that as being not even a quarter of his annual taxes.

The NBA Players Association has pledged $2.5 million. That represents about 400 players, or a little more than 6 thousand dollars per player (avg salary: $5 million).

Other celebrities are also chipping in but I wonder if some are giving face time on telethons or charity basketball games as a substitute to donating themselves.

I know every small part helps, but I also think about the combined staggering wealth of our nations pro athletes and actors. I also recognize that many people in position to help are making major contributions - this isn't meant to over-generalize or condemn all those who are well off.

I'm not trying to rile anyone up, and if there are simple explanations (like say, only 10% of one's income is deductable via charitable donations) please inform me so I'm not scratching my head for no good reason.

To give even 10 percent of your annual salary is a lot of money. Imagine if you make 50,000 per year and you just handed over $5k to relief efforts. That is a big chunk of change.

I think athletes and celebrities are like most people. Some give. Some don't. Some are compassionate. Some are not.

I thought tax deuctible just means that it doesn't can't as taxable income. So if Stephon make 10mil a year, and the tax is around 45% for that 10mill, it just mean that you'll be taxed at 9 mil level. So when Stephon donated 1 million dollars, it means that his net after tax income is around 450 k less. That's how I think the tax system works, but I'm no accountant so if some one else can confirm or correct my statements please it please do.

    Exactly.

I've heard people at work talking about how rappers and NBA stars are giving up thousands and they should give more. Whatever. Would it be interesting to see what percentage of the "non-entertainer" population actually gave anything at all. In all honesty, who cares? No explanations are necessary - they're human like everyone else, and do what they think is right.

I DO CARE what others are giving, because they are fortunate to NOT be in the situation and should look at everyone's situation. The stars SHOULD give.
    ------------------------
On one hand, you have the givers, the ones who give, but don't want it to be known because they're kind enough that publicity doesn't matter to them

On another, you have the givers, the ones who give, and desire the 'regular' people to know they gave, because they feel they should be known as philantropists.

On another, you have the ones who come out telling US to give, but they themselves haven't given.

On the last hand, you have the ones as a poll choice suggests, that are not willing to give up "one of their 6 escalades".

I believe most are on the third or second scenario I give here.

The Chronicle has a section that says what other countries are giving. I would be PISSED if my country didn't give at least SOMETHING. That's a whole another topic, but if you look at the situation in which the "giver" is, the giver should give if they're in a GOOD situation.

What if the person who made $50,000 per year had $50 million in the bank?

This decision is up to the individual. If they decide not to give, I'm not going to take it personal.

I don't think it would hurt the NBA to do what Warrick Dunn challenged the NFL in giving 5K a piece. Anybody in professional sports could afford to give 5k and the final result would be incredible.

Can you honestly think of a celebrity that has refused to give?

    That's different.
