http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=305 -- A Middle East research organization reports that Apple's flagship retail store on 5th Avenue in midtown Manhattan (between 58th and 59th) is offensive to Muslims. The report cites an Islamic Web site urging Muslims to spread the word in hope that "Muslims will be able to stop the project." The report by The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), a 501 (c)3 organization based in Washington, D.C., states that some Islamic Web sites take exception to Apple's cube-shaped building design (pictured above) and that it "constitutes a blatant insult to Islam." The reason? Because the building resembles the Ka'ba in Mecca (pictured below), is called "Apple Mecca," (by whom?), is open 24 hours a day like the Ka'ba, and "contains bars selling alcoholic beverages." Ka'ba means cube. It is the first place Allah was worshiped. From the outside it does not look very exciting. It is made of concrete blocks. Inside it is decorated with texts from the Qu'ran. I was just at the Fifth Avenue Apple store in NYC and don't remember them serving alcohol. The report appears to have misunderstood the intent of the "Genius Bar" and the "iPod bar." The group which "explores the Middle East through the region's media" only appears to have two valid facts in their complaint - that the Apple store is in the shape of a cube and that it's open 24 hours a day. UPDATE: MEMRI is not suggesting that the Apple store is offensive, they merely cite "an Islamic Web site." Their function is to translate existing news reports from Arabic, not endorse or agree with those reports.
I agree that followers are Islam are way too politically correct. Heck, they are so PC they should all be teaching in US universities. This is yet another reason we can't stop short of victory.
Kill them because they complain? I agree that this as well as several of the other fringe 'offensive to Islam' complaints are silly, but perhaps we should consider the alternative of saying, "It may offend you but that's par for the course in a multicultural society. Get over it." before we consider waging war on complainism.
this is such bullsh!t. give me a break. memri presents its agenda to dehumanize islam and quotes obscure websites in order to show some a distorted picture of islam. typical crap from memri. the fact that anyone can even report it is absurd. but i wouldn't expect much better from the starter of this thread. talk about opportunists and propagandists. just because some obscure nutcase has a website, doesn't mean he is representative. however its a field day for memri. it wouldn't even surprise me if they planted such crap just so they could cover it.
I don't think he is talking about starting a war on complainism. I think he's talking about another war currently going on.
I guess my concern was that I didn't how the following quote: ...or the 'War on Terror' had anything to do with this story unless you want to say Terrorist = Muslim.
I don't know why people buy in to this and think all muslims take offense.. This is just ONE website, who claims to be an Islamic website that is complaining. If all Muslims get upset by this then Nintendo should've heard about it years ago when they came out with the Game Cube.. People are giving this website wayyyy too much attention.
Generalizes? Yes, that is true...but it sure seems like a lot of complaining is coming from the Muslim faith.....and then all the Muslims rush to the "Stop generalaizing us" campaign. IMHO, the cube thing is nonsensical.......it is laughable to even give it a moments thought. DD
In fairness, there doesn't seem to be much if any complaining by the muslim faith. If you follow the links involved up top, all you get to is a story by MEMRI that claims unspecified people on the internet are complaining - no links or proof or anything. It's probably just some random internet posting by some nutbag who misinterpreted something that appears to be completely blown out of proprortion. Really there is more complaining about the complaining from the other side than actual complaining. It's one of the things that reminds you about how annoying the internet can be sometimes in terms of making mountains out of molehills.
Come on now. Complaining that there is more complaining about the complaining from the other side than actual complaining is totally uncalled for. I would like to complain about the complaining about peope who complain that the other side is complaining.
basso's right.. muslims should stop right away with their complaining they don't have the right to complain about anything if they're not happy, then just be suicide bombers
On my post I was just being stupid and writing about what I initially thought the thread would be on when I read the title. It was in jest.
What was sillier, the complaint about the Apple building, or the complaint about the Burger King ice cream cones?
