....is Saturday Night Live actually funny again? I know they're getting a lot of mileage out of Trump (as they should....), but even without that it seems like the show has been pretty funny lately. New cast is really growing on me and Weekend Update is consistently on point. Add to that Baldwin's SCARY-good Trump, Kate McKinnon's over-the-top Kellyanne Conway and now McCartney's Spicer press conferences and it's no surprise the ratings are higher than they've been in years. This show will never die. It's really the only reason I'm actually glad Trump won...
As a whole I would agree with you, the cast is solid. Last weeks episode really wasn't all that funny to me though. Good seeing Tracy Morgan on SNL again.
I've been watching it every week for about a year, and I love it. This week was probably the best week of great skits in one week episode in a good while. The Beyonce skit, the black female trump skit, the Spicer skit, cheetos skit, the people court, lol.
I guess my expectations were too high for the Baldwin show. I thought it fell flat. I think it could have used more than one Trump sketch. And, it should have been a Trump sketch to open instead of another McCarthy-Spicer skit. I kind of liked McCarthy for the first Spicer skit but this one just didn't do anything for me. I don't want her to continue to do it. It's been a better year for SNL because Alec kills it as Trump (obviously). And, there's so much to make fun of in politics right now.
Yeah, it's just your imagination. In fact this might be one of the worst things I've ever seen on TV. Not even remotely funny. Sit through it, watch all of it. Skeleton Bannon is funny I guess.
Their Trump stuff is good and the current Weekend Update is the best its been i a while imo But this year and the last 2 or so have been an all time bad level for me. Its taking them a while to recover from when they lost like a half dozen great cast members. Too many really bad cast members
It's been funny for years. People are way too down on SNL when it's "bad" and overrate the "peak" years.
I don't think I've ever instantly liked any cast/cast member, with the possible exception of Farley who I loved from the get-go. It always takes a while for a cast to grow on me.
It's pretty good, for sure. Don't watch it consistently enough to offer an opinion worth hearing on whether it's better than it's recently been, but I do enjoy some sketches now. Kinda surprised to see the love for Weekend Update, I find it just OK. Michael Che is pretty ordinary and the other guy just plays the standard nerdy white guy schtick. I don't hate it but I don't really like it either. (On a related note, I would definitely recommend Michael Che's Netflix stand-up special. It was great - he actually got to show a bit of himself, unlike his Weekend Update segments.)
He had a great line about not being aware that the HUD Secretary position even existed. Something like "Ben Carson is in charge of the projects? Who was in charge before, the crips?"
Kate McKinnon is basically carrying that show. And no, it's not getting better, it's simply getting provided better source material.
Its an institution. Its been declared "dead" with each and every cast turnover... from the original years to the Murphy years to the Crystal/JLD/Short disaster year to the Carvey/Hartmann/Myers years to the Ferrell/Fallon years to the Hader/Sudekis/Wiig years to now. Obviously, its only as good as its source material... and its cast. But, its not in danger of going anywhere... and will still churn out a hit star every 3-4 years.
It's been really strange for me to revisit SNL over the past year and remember how I thought it was the greatest thing in the world when I was 11. Then I discovered the State and saw that Fallon gigglechild and swore it off except for that one time where Fey was Palin. I caught up on some of the high points I missed over the past couple of decades and there are a few. Hader was great on the show. Fey and Poehler went on to do great things and I wish they would bring Bobby Monihan's drunk uncle to the Weekend update more. That **** is hilarious. Seems like it's always had people I despise or find deeply unfunny on the show since the 90s. That hasn't changed for me. Of course there's Mckinnon who's a natural. Then there are others. Inspired choice to bring in McCarthy. If you compare this last one to the Tom Hanks episode it sucked, frankly. I dunno, it's fine. Bring back Norm to replace those Update nerds though. Norm is the greatest.
Haven't watched much SNL the past 20 years. Not because I thought it fell off, but my time is more limited. Glad it's still kicking.
