Police and sheriffs deputies are combing through a field in Katy after a stolen pickup truck carrying more than a dozen people crashed and its occupants fled.

Around 12:20 p.m., an off-duty Department of Public Safety officer spotted a four-door pickup with people lying in the bed, according to a Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesman. The employee ran the license plate of the pickup truck and determined that it was stolen, authorities said.

The DPS worker trailed the pickup for several miles before calling for backup, authorities said. The pickup sped down Pederson Road, just off I-10, and crashed through a yellow country gate bordering a rice field and into a ditch.

The truck drove several hundred yards further down the road before its occupants scattered. According to authorities, 15 people fled into the field.

Deputies and members of the Katy Police Department, along with other agencies, were combing through the fields with horses, K-9 units and a helicopter.

At least eight occupants have already been detained, said Christina Garza, spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.

"We have to do a very thorough search just in case anybody's injured," she said. "We can't leave anyone behind."

Ken Boswell, 45, was bringing his daughter's new Rottweiler/shepherd pup, Tequila, home from the pet store when he saw police and the helicopter scouring the field, which is about half a mile from his house in the Willow Creek Farm subdivision.

"There's no outlet back here," he said. "You'd have to have a reason to be out here."

Alissa Wiswell, another neighbor, has lived in the area for two years. "There's a lot of places to hide in the field," she said. "There's just a lot of different places they could be in there, there's a lot of debris, and several trails."

Dang! That was messed up! I don't mind when someone speeds and drives recklessly, just as long as you don't put someone else's life in danger! The idiot driving this van put 28 people in danger, not counting all the innocent people who are on that road! I hope he does time for this!

In both cases, people risking their lives doing something illegal!
