I know I started a thread on this awhile back...but no search I guess... For some reason my internet connection isnt recognized right away. My comp will boot up, load windows, but then take like 3 minutes for it to recognize my internet. Any reason this might be happening? I've tried rebooting my router and updating my LAN drivers. Any help is appreciated.
Back in the day you wouldn't dare to take that tone of voice with me young man. I've told you before not to test my gangster.
Its not dropping, it just takes about 3-5 minutes after windows loads for my connection to be recognized. running vista 64, not sure what i might have done, used to recognize my internet right away.
Disconnect the cable. Reboot. Once the computer has rebooted, plug the cable in. Does it still take as long?
Usually you have OTHER program or service thingies running before your "network connection" is established. As soon as the computer starts, run task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del, click "Start Task Manager"). See what starts AFTER the "network connection established." Disconnect the cable. Restart the machine WITHOUT the interweb connected. See if those programs start again. Cool. Take notes of what you see "starting" on the Task Manager. Do this several times so you don't miss anything. Then, once it starts up, and then nothing is running, keep Task Manager up, and physically put in that's what she said the cable onto the port. See what happens (do other programs let you know "you now have Internet!"?). Now, restart with the network conection and try it all again. You're basically troubleshooting what programs prevent you from starting your internet connection quickly. That's what SHE said.
When you say it takes 3 minutes to recognize your internet, what do you mean? What is it doing during that time? What does the network icon in your status bar show? If you mouse over the icon what does the tooltip say? What happens when you try to visit a web page? Does it stay stuck on "connecting to...", does it say "waiting for ..." or does it just come back immediately with an error message?
Try different PHYSICAL cables, a different PC or something that uses the Interwebs on the same cable, jiggling it that's what she said, and also seeing if your network card is seated properly or if it heats up or if it is dirty, etc. What I meant by "see what's running" on my previous post was to figure out what programs are causing a delay and eliminating them. You can also run "msconfig" to eliminate programs attempting anything before your connection is recognized.
Startup programs/services shouldn't interfere with network startup, unless he has some kind of firewall program that's temporarily blocking outgoing connections.
^^ The "internet connection" service isn't always the first thing to run... it may be that others are trying to connect something to the interweb... or running a scan, etc. That's what I meant. But I know what you mean and you're correct, sir .
It seems that once he disconnected the cable and rebooted and then reconnected the cable, he should have eliminated any programs causing the delay.
the icon on my desktop is the two computers and will have a red x in it. i assume its just loading up whatever start up programs windows loads. i do have a firewall that loads up...not sure if that might be causing a delay. webpages just comes up with an error message immediately
