Apparently they give these things out like it's candy. he should try it with a dog or cat next time. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,272074,00.html
It is a violation of federal law for anyone under 18 to own a long gun and anyone under 21 to own a handgun.
If that were true (which it isn't), just about every twelve year old boy in rural USA would be in jail (along with their parents, one would presume).
Are you willing to bet $$$ on that? I have copies of the NFA and the CGA sitting nearby that were provided to me by the BATF when I received a federal license to sell firearms. I will look it up and quote the text of the laws verbatim.
perhaps your confusion lies with the ATF's ability to be confusing themselves. Here they claim that possession of firearms by juveniles is "generally" unlawful..........and then go on to explain how it is okay for juveniles to possess firearms for "limited" purposes--like employment, hunting, target practice, farming or ranching. Looks like they covered everything but liquor store robberies and drive-by's.........which if I'm not mistaken, are already illegal. The very first sentence in their response to the FAQ (which is really one word: YES) pretty much clears up the whole matter though. Minors can own firearms with their parents approval. So yes.....if you want to bet $$$, I've got a few bills in my wallet. http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#b14
you might also be confusing "ownership" with "purchasing from a FFL dealer." There are different rules for buying guns in a gun store (or Wal-mart, or any other dealer with an FFL) or receiving one as a gift or buying a gun individual to individual.
Nope. If grandpa give Little Johnny a gun, then it is legally owned by daddy, who is responsible as Little Johnny's legal guardian. As his legal guardian, daddy can allow little Johnny to use his gun, but random guy on the street can not do so. Technically, it is also illegal to buy a gun with the express intent of giving it to someone else (known as a straw purchase), though they don't really enforce it in these sorts of instances. If Grandpa has a little boy fetish and gives a gun to the 8yr old neighbor in exchange for sexual favors, Grandpa has violated federal laws regarding the ownership of firearms, in addition to laws regarding pederasty and underage children. You are wrong. Tell me what sum you wish to wager and I will quote you directly from the actual laws.
OK.....how 'bout twenty bucks? However, if you are to quote from the actual laws, I have to be allowed a rebuttal. And the only rebuttal I could convincingly offer would be to quote from later laws that revise the older, more confusing ones. Before you jump at this though, do you really think the ATF would flat out say on their website that it is okay to purchase a firearm "as a gift" for your juvenile child........and then cite a US code? Do you really think the state of Illinois would authorize a 10 month old to own a firearm if this act violated Federal law? Anyway, I disuputed your original assertion that Federal Law prohibits anyone under 18 to own a long gun and anyone under 21 to own a handgun. These things will be what you need to prove if you want this bet. Federal law, 18 for long guns, 21 for handguns. One last hint if you don't want to go to the trouble of betting: You mentioned the NFA and CGA (I assume you mean the GCA of 1968). The GCA of 1968 was heavily revised by another act in the mid eighties.
