When I try to close my garage door, it get's to the point where it's almost closed and then it starts going back up again. I stop it, then try to close it again and it gets to the same point and starts going back up again. This happens over and over again every morning.

I've tried dusting off the little motion detector thingys on the bottom, I've made sure there's nothing blocking them etc but this keeps happening.

Any suggestions from any of you bbs handymen?

Usually the sensors are not "seeing" each other properly. I would make sure they are lined up right.

So the sensors have to be pointed directly at eachother?

Yes. MB is right. Drummer, I also have this problem on occasion. Each time it happens, I adjust one of my sensors that seems to have slipped out of line a bit, and then the door closes just fine. You might want to see if a screw needs to be tightened or something like that.

I would think that, if this was the problem, they wouldn't let the garage door get almost to the bottom.

My guess is, the door is encountering resistance in its tracks when it comes close to the bottom. Possibly because there is some debris stuck in the tracks or if the tracks are bent.

Many garage doors are sensitive to resistance and if they encounter any, they will retract.

This is correct. I have had this problem in the past. Try spraying some WD40 on the tracks and rollers. If this doesn't work, make sure the tracks are not bent, and the door is even on both sides.

If the tracks are warped a little, the weight of the door itself can slightly move the tracks as it comes down and the sensors attached at the bottom will become misaligned.

You could also have a bit of the bottom weather stripping that has come lose and trips the sensors on the way down, causing them to think there is an object there.

Now that I think of it, one of the sensors isn't even screwed in. It's sitting on top of a little box. If the sensors have to be pointed directly at eachother, I'm almost sure that's the problem. I'll bet the box moves slightly when the door starts coming down.

I guess I have to figure out a way to screw in that sensor myself to where it's lined up perfectly. This should be fun...

That is a good call--I had something similar happen with mine. For that matter, most garage door openers have a "sensitivity" setting at the gear box, so if you are encountering more tension at the end of the track run, you could dial out some of the sensitivity.
