I have a Compaq. I press the power button - hear the hard drive, then the Compaq logo appears on the screen, then the hard drive goes dead and nothing happens. Sits like a duck with a huge logo on the screen. What to do next! Mucho help needed as I have part of a novel on the damn thing. Thanks in advance. It's definately not battery power. It has a green light. And is plugged into adaptor. Hope this is not bad!
Which OS? Have you tried to step through the Windows boot (f8 I believe, maybe alt-f8), or can you boot-up in safe mode? Did you install any software recently? And FWIW, don't you back-up your data? External USB2 drives are pretty cheap now. You've got a lot to try beforehand, but if the hard disk has crashed, you can always get the data off of it with a data recovery service (but $$$).
No installs. The only possible symptom I can think of is having left it on all night. But have done that before. And it is still charged. So doubt that is the problem. I'm on windows XP. Have not tried F8, but will try that tonight. Thing is, it's almost like it's not going to let me do anything. I was hitting some F keys yesterday trying to see if that would do anything during startup. Didn't know which one to hit. But tried them all. No reaction. The screen is just blank for about 10 seconds and then the logo jumps on there. .
Like a dumb ass, I have the usb drive, but never used it. Hitting self on head as we speak. Will backup a lot if I can fix this problem.
Can't recall. Will check again tonight and report back tomorrow. It was definately doing something in terms of sound. Seemed to sound more like typical drive actvity for about 10 seconds. But don't quite recall hearing any beeps.
leaving a computer on for the night does damage??? i always leavve mine on, coz im afraid it wont turn back on if i trun it off.
Compaq has been good except for Battery/Adaptor. I have to figit to get the lap top connected and charging. I think this is a common problem with Compaq from what I've read. Also, it appears as tho' this logo problem may be more common than I thought. The internet has offered similar solutions as can be found here. "F8", Bootable disk, safe mode. Will try all at one point if it will let me. Still putting pieces together on how to fix this very odd problem.
what laptop do you have I had the R3210, and it had a wonderful charger, it moved around and adjusted itself as I moved my laptop, I then Upgraded to a R3240, and this laptop charger already needs figiting to set in right...
