I have a 20 GB hard drive in my current system yet the computer is reading it only has 8 GB of free space. I then noticed that the hard drive is also reading that 8 GB are partitioned while 11 GB are unpartitioned. How do I get those 11 GB available to use?

Speaking of hard drives, they have a pretty sweet deal at CompUSA, a Maxtor 7200 RPM/8MB cache 160 Gig for $80. I got one on Sunday and planning to use at as an external HD with an enclosure with my laptop. Deal is good till Saturday.

If you have Windows XP, fdisk doesn't exist anymore. Instead, go to the start menu, then click on "run". In the box, type "compmgmt.msc". Click on disk management, and then you should be able to create a new partition and format that partition graphically in Windows.

And I am running XP. I forgot to mention that my 20 GB hard drive is my slavedrive while I have a 60 GB master, does that make a difference?

    Naw....do what DH recommended.

When I popped in with the fdisk comment, I had forgotten that you were running XP.

All you have to do is to go to the control panel, and choose Administrative Tools, then Comoputer Management, then Disk Management, then right click on the unpartitioned spce and choose format.

or do it the easy way and bringup the run dialog and type what he said to,,,it will take you to the same function

I have a 40 GB hard drive that has XP installed on it and there are also some file on the HD that I would like. Can I install it on to my PC as a slave drive, transfer the files I want to keep to the master, then reformat the drive?

Yes, your ide cable that has the current hd connected should have another connector availible and plug it into to power supply and set the jumpers on the second hd to slave and the drive would be viewed just as another hd. You can format the drive via the drive management tools mentioned before.

Sorry for derailing this thread a little bit.

I am looking to get an external hard drive? Is Iomega a good brand? What about Maxtor? What do I have to pay attention to when choosing the one to buy? Please give recommendations and advice.

    Thank you.

The external drive will be to provide backup and/or extend drive space for a notebook computer?
