I'm just curious about everyone's opinion on something. I have heard conservatives say on several occassions that we need more "grown ups" in government. They said that GW and his group would mean grown ups would be back in charge.

First, is this insulting to anyone else? I mean, last time I checked, I was a freakin' grown up and I was not a GW supporter.

Second, I understand the implication that "grown ups" are more responsible, blah, blah. But, just for a moment, which would you rather be? Dick Cheney or a little kid. Who do you think has more fun? Who would you rather hang out with?

I remember reading a story about a group of mothers and children who went to the beach in the early spring on the east coast. The water was still pretty cool but the kids immediately made a b-line for the water and began jumping around a playing. The mothers sat on the beach and complained about how cold the water must be and how crazy the kids were for getting in it. They were glad that they were smart enough and grown up enough to realize that the water was cold.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but who was having more fun, the kids or their mom's?

I just don't get it. It is as if we have to get older, put on some respectable clothes, cut our hair, get grumpy and complain. The point of life is to enjoy yourself. You only go around once (unless you believe in reincarnation) so why bother even living if you are miserable? What's the point? If being grown up means being serious and surly, I'll pass.

    Don't you love rhetoric?

Liberals aren't grown up and conservatives are idiots. :)

IMO, there's a kernel of truth in both statements.
It's easier to be a liberal when you're not invested in the status quo. By definition, that's what conservatives seek to preserve. So, the more "grown-up" and successful you become, the more likely you are to become a conservative to maintain the conditions under which you succeeded. Liberals, then, are more likely to be shiftless youths, or disgruntled old people who never managed to succeed in the system.

On the flip side, conservatives are constrained by these conditions. They have a vested interest in believing the status quo is correct, so they don't always see as clearly as people who aren't participating as successful members of it. Thus, they commit the sophistry of assuming their position to be correct in the process of validating it! Liberals, conversely, can more objectively way the relative merits of decisions.

These stereotypes are crude characterizations, but imo, there's something there... you just can't ever act on it, because it's false far too often!

Who's to say that "serious and surly" people don't have fun being "serious and surly"?:)

I'll bet Jesse Helms knows how to party. :D He's probably had more hookers than any of us have...

That "grown ups" thing is just a part of the conservative mantra, and nothing to be taken seriously. But anyone in a position of responsibility has to be able to handle serious situations that might demand a little surliness at times. If they can do it without a surly attitude and a serious frown on their face, more power to them... ;)

Living is not all about fun. When those kids get colds the next day, who will be having more fun?

I disagree. Life is not about all about enjoying yourself. Life is about adding to your species. How you go about living your life is your business.

I don't find it insulting because im not in the government and/or they were not referring to me.

As for the Dick Cheny and little kid anology, it all depends on what type of person you want to be. Im a family type of person. Work comes pretty far down on the list. My best friend is a workaholic and puts work first. He's this "grown-up" type and he's really not that fun to be around most of the times. Each to his own. I don't try to change him and he doesn't try to change me. Afterall, were grownups :)

Taking positions up in the government is NOT ABOUT FUN! Thats not saying you can't have fun, of course. i would much rather have a stuffy person in office than one who spending more of his time living his life to the fullest at that moment than doing his job.

    Jeff,

I have to say my impressions of the average Republican leader, GW not included, is that they are childish. I also get the impression a lot of the democratic leaders are idiotic, Gore not included.
