My fridge is barely cold now. Freezer, too. Food is thawing and it's not making ice. I think it needs a recharge of freon, but I'm not sure.

Haven't had to call a refrigerator repair service in..... well, ever (I think).

Can anyone recommend someplace that is trustworthy, does good work, and has good rates? (note: when I say "good rates", I really don't know what rates to expect).

Freon doesn't run out or wear out. If it needs a recharge of freon, then it has a leak.

It is possible just your coils need to be cleaned.

Okay. What's a good place to call for that?

So that others may reference this in the future...

We called a place called Houston Appliance, AC, and Heating Repair - we just looked 'em up online.

For $40 a guy came out and took a look at the fridge. According to him, it's got a bad condenser, which pretty much totals the fridge. Seems like he did a decent enough job of checking it out.

So, we're gonna go shopping for a new fridge tomorrow.

In the past 30 days, my engine broke 5 motor mounts, my 9-month-old Samsung 52" LCD HDTV died, and now the fridge has died.

    that sucks

My 4.5 year old fridge stopped cooling on the fridge side but was still freezing on the freezer side. I just let the coil thaw itself out (I was going to turn the fridge off for a day to do this, but didn't want to lose the frozen food). It slowly started cooling again and is now working. Except for the ice maker in it that just died. :D

If neither side was cooling for you, then yeah, you probably have bigger issues. Maybe it was your turn : during one storm, I think my house was hit by lightning or something because I lost a NAS, my Denon receiver, my 5.1 computer speakers, and 3 smoke detectors. Luckily the receiver and speakers were covered by warranty and the smoke detectors were cheap. I had to bite the bullet on the NAS, though.

    Good luck.

Thanks, but I wouldn't trust those. I'd probably pay to have mine repaired before that.

I hadn't thought of using craigslist, though.

Sears. They agree to come out and fix you refrig and the cost is somewhat less than a condenser. If you know it is a condenser, you can't lose. Cheaper than a new fridge. Will save you a hundred or two.
