Damage to an underground distribution line is being blamed for a power outage that has darkened at least five buildings downtown, including the Harris County Family Law Center on Congress Street.

The outage has prompted the University of Houston-Downtown to cancel classes at its One Main St.campus until 4 p.m.. While students and faculty are being told to stay home, all other workers should report to workt.

A CenterPoint spokeswoman said workers expect power to be restored this afternoon but were still trying to determine the cause and extent of damage. The outage was reported around 3 a.m. and has affected some 360 residential and commercial customers, said Emily Mir-Thompson.

Other buildings reportedly without power include the Juvenile Justice Center, Islamic Temple, the King George Hotel and the Crispin building.
