Question for you job seekers out there, do you use employment agencies? are they a good way of getting a job? I am looking for a job just like everyone else and having no luck.

Seems like my degree from UT (advertising) is worthless, or I perhaps I need new methods of job seeking.

A buddy of mine that graduated in August (summer grad) used one. I forget the name of it, but they set him up with a temporary position because he basically told him he would take anything.

It was a good move, because he got to know the folks he worked at (small oil tools firm). His boss at the small firm went to work for Shell and hired him to Shell because he did such a good job for him at the small firm.

If you are having no luck, give it a try. Even if you don't like where they set you up, maybe you can at least network.

I agree with Supermac. I got a degree in Computer Science that turned out to be worthless as the computer industry turned to crap at just the wrong time. I stayed afloat during temporary assignments through various staffing agencies (mostly Officeteam) and eventually landed a job working at a chemical storage terminal that has a pretty good chance for moving up. It most likely won't be where I will end up long term, but it is certainly something I can easily live on until I figure out what to do.

If you are in the Austin area - contact Charlie Atchison at the Austin American Statesman. He is the advertising director. He graduated from University of Texas in '79. He has seen many sides of life and is a good mentor for the up and coming youth. If he does not have anything- he could be a good contact..

    good Luck...
