Short version: Anybody have any experience with saving medical records on your computer? Any recommendations?

With the recent birth of my daughter (she is 1 week old today!) and with Katrina in recent memory, I've heard talk about the benefit of keeping medical records electronically.

Does anybody do this? I don't think I like the idea of WebMD (or other Internet sites) because of privacy concerns. But a friend of mine had some program on their PC that organizes everything then burns the data off to CD. If that were true, then I could periodically take backups to a safety deposit box and/or send it to a relatives house of safe safekeeping.

    Thoughts?

Do you have your daughter electronic medical record or with the hospital give you a copy electronically?

No, I don't have the hospital's electronic records. I'm imagining that I'd have to manually enter data and/or scan in documents.

Yeah, I was thinking that. The hospital has to be the one to give them to you. The medical records are the property of the facility, not the Dr. Good thinking. Everyone should keep a copy of their medical record. You would be suprised how many mistakes have been accidently found. Don't know any software that could help you though. However, if you have any questions regarding Medical records, let me know.

EMR's are not widely used at doctor's offices yet, nor are there any standardized data schema.

Not sure what your neighbor did other than key data off of the Bills or EOBs he may have recieved.

It prob would not be out of the question for you to periodically request that your daughter's primary care doc copy her chart for your (don't do that too often! ... and be sure to explain why, some may fear litigation).

Did you happen to have the cord blood saved?

    And BTW, CONGRATULATIONS! [IMG]

Well, the word he meant to type was "faculty", so I'm sure you can figure it out from there. :D

I found a couple apps but before I wasted my time evaluating them, I was hoping somebody had some personal experience with this stuff.

    HealthFrame Explorer
    or
    RecordSmart

It doesn't sound like anybody is doing this.

    Thanks Cohen and Tim.

No, we didn't save the cord blood. It is very very expensive and nobody could give us any concrete examples of how it would be used. At this point, it seems a little like a cryogenically preserved heads. :) Someday, they might find a use but today, the uses seem limited. So at that expense, I couldn't justify it. Hopefully we won't regret that decision.

I had the same experience. Saw the cost and the potential benefit and didn't see how it'd be worthwhile. I tried to see if someone else would pick up the cost (like someone running an experiment) but struck out.
