this probably will come across as a strange question, but here's the deal: i've recently read a chinese novel in which a female character is one of those "devastating beauties", as in so utterly breathtaking and stunning in her appearance that she literally enraptures her viewer and inspires/renders irrational/haunts almost all men who comes across her.

i've never met someone like this in real life. i mean there are women i've seen who are just unbelievably beautiful, whose a smile would charm my socks off, whose every gesture seems to exude youthful exuberance or elegance or gentleness, but never someone who blew my mind. maybe force me to do a double-take, or in some cases, force you to keep looking at her involuntarily even over a long period of time (happened a lot in high school), but i've never just lost it, and went nuts over anyone.

in balzac and other french authors too, there often appeared what they called "torpedoes", which was beauty which struck so hard, as to leave a man utterly stricken and his wits destroyed. is it that those authors were just more sensitive to this stuff, or have i just not seen enough of the world to know what they're talking about?

and is this what they call love at first sight? and is it true what they say that a relationship based on first impressions usually ends badly? and what about this theory which says that body chemistry has something to do with attraction too? something about how our antibodies mesh? but i digress. really just wanted to ask the question in the subject line. any insights?

You've never met a woman who "blew your mind". If you're fortunate, someday you'll meet someone whose looks, voice, gaze, smell... all those intangibles plus, most importantly, an intelligence and personality that will just blow you away.

It's happened to me, more than once. Maybe I've been lucky.

if you don't mind me asking. how old are you? and how many times? (just trying to figure out how often this stuff happens to you).

and what happened afterwards? did you become disappointed by them over time? did you find that they were not as perfect as you imagined? or did you find them to be even better as time went on?

i'm not an unattractive guy, and have tangibles and intangibles which i'd imagine most women would look for, but it's finding that special someone which is bothering me. i'm 27 and it's about that time, you know. and this stuff begins to eat away at me...

    Try looking at their backsides.

No guy has ever blew my mind either. Not even Brad Pitt.

You know, come to think of it I've never encountered any devestatingly beautiful women either... Years of p*rnography and comic books have probably desensitized me to that sort of thing though.

Quite a bit older than you.
Like I said, maybe I've been lucky, but not so lucky that I don't have any regrets.

I left someone once that I regret. I let someone leave and I still regret that. Women have left me, and in a couple of instances, it was for the best, either for her or for me. Maybe I'm easily blown away, but looking back, I don't think so.

I married someone who blew me away... I seem to have had the same affect on her at the time. That was lucky. I said I must have been lucky, didn't I?

The best advice I could probably give is if you see someone and she moves something in you, walk up or sit down by her and start a conversation. The worst thing that can happen is nothing. So what have you lost? (well, maybe a lot... but at least you gave it a shot) Every significant relationship I ever had started from pure chance. And every one led basically from what I just told you. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you and you're going out with women you think should have that affect and don't. My impression is the women you see who might fit your "parameters" are women you aren't having conversations with.

(man, I hope I don't read this later and wish I'd kept my mouth shut... ;) ...I hate not having the edit function.)
