As I've been giving all of my time to JD Edwards lately, I've lost touch with some of my old realm of Network Admin (hey....it was either that or stop coming here). Anyway, can any of you tell me what's up with Dell offering build-in cellular technology in their new laptops? Is it ready for primetime? How bad are the speeds? How does it connect to your WAN? What are the monthly fees? I'm trying to look on their website, but I'm not finding much.....I figured you guys would be quicker.
Pole, some of the newer machines do offer the internal wireless card. It's basically the same as the old "True Mobile" cards, except they're hidden away inside the chassis.
What does it do? Well....I kind of know what it does, but if it's WAN capabilities work with cellular technology (as their website indicates), then they must be partnered with some carrier(s). Or can you just use anyone? If it's "always on," there has to be just a few select carriers working with them. I don't mind reading the documentation, I just can't find anything. Even Dell's website doens't offer many clues.
As far as I know WAN operates on spread spectrum technology at an unlicensed frequency. I'm not sure if the cellular technology has the capability to interface with 802.11a yet.
