Inadequate wiring or a lot of noise on the line will slow your connection speeds down. I think you can get the phone company to run a check on your line to see if there is anything wrong. Try giving them a call and explain your symptoms and see if they will do that.

dude...if ur getting 4-5k on a dialup..your doin about as good as can be expected..

Disclaimer: the following explanation is simplified for better understanding.

AFAIK...56k is short for 56000 baud which is roughly equivelant to bits (baud=bit) while your download rate is expressed in bytes..(1byte=8 bits) So..if you are getting 5k download rate..that equals 5000 bytes x 8 = 40000 bits ...which is not too shabby all things considered...

Anyone that is a telco or experienced network engineer may be able to provide a better explanation..

    To paraphrase Dennis.....

Thats my understanding, I could be wrong.:)

Well it usually does run at 56k but right when I start a download, it steadily drops until it stabiliezes around 4.5kbps

5K d/l's on a modem are awesome! when i was in college and used telesys (UT grad), i got 1.5-2 K d/l's...

shell out for cable modems or DSL if you want more man... that's all i can say!

I'm assuming you're confusing your bits, bytes, baud, bps, DTE, etc.

Your 4.5 kbps is pretty good.
