My WindowsXP Pro now takes a long time to boot up (it appears that it is recovering the desktop...takes about 5 minutes for the icons to load). It also reinstalls my printer on each boot.

Those are just symptoms. My big pain is that many installs now just plain stop. I can install if I go to safe mode, but in standard mode I must halt the process from task manager, after which I get an error that the remote procedure call failed. Windows updates now halt and do not proceed (with no error messages) indefinately.

I have hardware and software firewalls, Norton Antivirus, Ad Aware, Spy Sweeper. My machine is clean.

    Thanks!

Yet another reason why I don't like Windows XP. I am seriously thinking of going back to Windows 2000.

    And no I don't want a Mac!

YOu probably have a whole bunch of startup applets running.

You can try to remove them using msconfig (programs, run, msconfig) but I find that that never really worked that well for me, i'm not sure if that cleans the registry I'm guessing.

Download that "tuneup utilities" thing from cnet and run the startup manager and registry cleaner, as well as all the other tests it has would probably be the best bet.

If all else fails re-install windows from the CD, that's what I had to do last month when I ran into insurmoutnable problems.

    SamFisher,

Yeah, I ran the config utility and shut down everything non-essential; didn't help.

I'll try the tune-up at cnet; I'd prefer to not reinstall. :(

I'm surprised you've had problems with XP Pro. If you're like me, you've been used to it being as steady as a rock.
    Good luck!

Anybody know where I can get a key for Windows 98? I lost my book with the COA on it and it had the key. I have to reformat my hd because along with Sasser, my computer freezes up and I ALWAYS get blue screens saying IRQL blah blah blah or PAGE FAULT blah blah blah and I end up having to restart and it happens ALL THE TIME!

I can't go back to Windows XP because I used an academic version of XP even though I burned it I was told the burned copy won't install correctly. I have 98 though.

    It was like a rock.

Then I had to reinstall a RAID on this box, which created some conflict and would reboot it periodically. Then I got hit with that piece or cr*p malware Clientman last week.

I've replaced the RAID and cleaned off clientman and all spyware, but something got messed with.

sounds like while cleaning or during infection some important system files got corrupted.

You might want to try reinstalling the drivers to all your hardware...but I doubt that will work.

you could also try to run System Restore from safe mode...or run the file verification utility from the System Information applet under Accessories

If none of these ideaas work...Im sorry to say you are facing reinstall.

btw..I agree with Deck...Im not a Winblows fan by a long shot(typing this from Suse Linux 9.1)...but I use XP for running programs I dont have in Linux...and it is much more rock solid than any previous OS from the Evil Empire.
