BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (CNN) -- A fire in a crowded Buenos Aires nightclub has killed at least 134 people and injured 260, officials said.

The fire began about 11 p.m. (9 p.m. ET) on Thursday during a rock concert in the Republica Cro Magnon disco, in the Once section of Buenos Aires, according to a spokesman in the mayor's office.

Witnesses said there were as many as 5,000 people inside the club when the fire broke out.

Emergency exits were locked as the owner was trying to keep people from sneaking into the club.

Also, someone from the crowd used a flare, which set the roof on fire.

    More tragedy.

Usually the week before Christmas and New Years is quiet in the news with the biggest story being whether someone deserved to be Time's Man of the Year.

What makes this particular tragedy sting is that it was avoidable. If not for stupidity and greed this wouldn't have happened.
Like the Great White Tragedy another factor that I find particularly galling as someone who works in architecture.

There are many non-flammable substances that can be used for sound proofing and in addition the space can be designed for better acoustics. For example, shortly after the Great White fire a fire started under similar circumstances at a club in Minneapolis. No one died in that because the ceiling wasn't flammable.

Yeah, what a terrible and avoidable tragedy. Stupid cheap club owner, couldn't he just spring for security guards?

The worst has to be the idiots in the crowd. Even though one guy started the fire, it seems that it's commonplace in Argentina to set off fireworks during concerts. What kind of morons shoot them off in a night club? The band actually stopped the show and pleaded with the crowd to stop. It would be poetic justice if all the victims were the people who brought fireworks, but I'm sure most if not all of those idiots made it out with their lives while innocent people who were looking to have fun had to perish.
