Do Canadian businesses (especially in Montreal) accept American dollars AND give a reasonable exchange rate?

Be careful with using a business to do your exchanges...they'll often charge you a service fee (usually a percentage). If you go to a bank, they'll usually do it for free.

I found that most places in Vancouver and Victoria took Canadian and American currency.

Most of them do, but your credit cards are accepted just about anywhere, and the CC companies will do the conversion for you at the latest exchange rate. It will look like you're paying for Canadian dollars, but the conversion will show up on your bill.

Make sure you get your GST form, so you can get half of the GST back.

    To echo the above responses...

Just about everywhere will accept $US. I can't imagine any tourist or retail place in Montreal not accepting $US. Your change will be in $cdn.

You will get a worse exchange rate (although usually pretty reasonable) because these places are not, afterall, in the business of exchanging money, so it is an extra bother to them.

And Pole's advise is sound. Credit cards are the way to go.

It shouldn't be a problem in big tourism centers like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, etc.. In other places, though, I wouldn't count on it. I doubt that any business here in St. John's would take American funds.

I always use credit cards when possible when out of the country. If I need cash, I use my AMEX at an ATM to get it as they generally have the best exchange rate.

    Thanks for all the info.
