Basic Question about Java

What is the minmum requirement for for running Java applets in Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firebird, etc.

I know nothing about Java, but I was planning on installing whatever I need to install. Do I need to install the entire Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition? Or is there a simple plug-in only that I can install?

r u planning to programming in java? if not, then u don't have to install the entire platform or JDK. if u working under windows, all u need is a java virtual machine for running java apps, which is available for download at microsoft's website.
