I moved in to a house recently and am just now about to order satellite, so for a while now I haven't been able to watch games (hence, no recaps). I'm willing to go a year contract on DirecTV, but I really want the Tivo setup. DirecTV has a deal where they will install it all, up to 3 rooms/receivers with one of them being Tivo for $99. Problem is they are all out of DirecTivo receivers, and you have to get on some waiting list (with no estimated time of when they will get them).

I've done a bunch of searches and seen some promotions ... just curious if anyone out there has dealt with this recently and found any great deals out there. I'd like to make a decision by tomorrow hopefully so by Thanksgiving I'm good to go, but that doesn't look likely if I want Tivo.

(clearing throat in my best Rich and Charlie impersonation)

ok, here's a minute for Today's satellite. dump the cable. give Today's Satellite a call.
listen, are you like me? tired of seeing your cable bill grow month after month? then give Today's Satellite a call. Here's the deal. You get free 3 room installation and as bonus, 610 callers get a free personal video recorder, similiar to TiVO. If you haven't heard, a new study claims a growing addicition for users digitally recording their programs with TiVO and I can tell ya, it's unbelievable. I mean you pause live tv, replay that call during the game in slow-mo, AND you get 3 months of free basic programming. Pound for pound, you will not find a better deal than this. So give Today's Satellite a call and mention you heard it on Sportsradio 610.

now here's a minute for everyone's internet. E-V, the numeral one, dot net......(15 minutes of advertisements ensue followed by 180 seconds of sports talk, and the cycle ensues)

Yea... Today's Satellite deal is thru Dish Network... and you get the first three months FREE... along with HBO and Cinemax.

The only difference b/t Dish and DirecTV is NFL Sunday Ticket... if you can live with your weekly dose of Texans and Cowboys games only, then Dish is a great option.

Thanks for the heads up guys.

I guess I could go with Dish Network, but I think I prefer DirecTV since I'm told all things being equal, that Tivo is just a much better interface than what Dish Network has for the DVR.

The kicker is this house already has Dish Network on the roof and there's a receiver and card here. I plugged it in yesterday and it just flat out works, oddly enough. Meaning no phone line or anything, but all the basic package cable channels come in. I don't know if it does that for some preview or what, but I can't get league pass that way :)

I called some of the places Finn had posted... only problem is they say it could be 10 business days to get here. BestBuy has a 2-room DVR system installed for $188 with a $100 mail-in rebate. Probably 3 days to have it installed or so. I may go that route - we'll see.

    Thanks again.

Clutch, I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but in the post office, where you get those moving packets, they always have a coupon in there for DirecTV. The last one I saw was, I believe, for three rooms, free installation. Of course, I have no idea when they could do it or how the Tivo things works.

Are you still in Austin? You should e-mail Major about Time Warner's New Digital Cable Tivo thingy. You can record up to three (well, at least two) shows at the same time while watching another. And this comes with no extra boxes or anything, just an extra $10 a month.

I wish I could remember the name of the website that I bought mine off of several years ago... they had real good deals.

You may want to try Best Buy and Circuit City... you can can usually get a basic system for $99.

The Time Warner Digital Cable "TIVO" solution was awesome in Austin. You could record 1 show while watching / buffering another show. The DirecTIVO allows for the recording of 2 shows while watching a 3rd RECORDED program (not live TV, as they want you to believe through misadvertising and fine print).

All-in-all, the DirecTIVO blows away Time Warner. But of course, you don't have to buy equipment or sign a 1-year contract with TW.

It just depends on if you're willing to commit (which you said you are, Clutch) and how much you want to spend.

On the plus side for TW, when I got it installed, I called TW-Austin, told them I wanted to upgrade to "TIVO", they turned on the service immediately, and I drove 2 blocks down the street to their office to pick up the set top box, drove home and installed it. The entire process took 20 minutes, total! Now that's efficient!

drapg, you can record more than that on TW now. It's at least two shows while you're able to watch a live show. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's the setup that Major has.

    WOW!!!!

I wish I was in Austin again! :(

Technology upgraded while I leave town. It's just not fair.

RM95, I don't think that's right. I've had TW's DVR box here in NYC for about 3 months now, and it only has 2 built-in tuners. This means I can 1) record a show and watch a different one at the same time or 2) record 2 shows at the same time and watch one of the recording shows. I cannot, however, record 2 shows and watch a THIRD live channel, too.

All in all, TW's DVR box is pretty damn cool. No need to get 2 cable boxes and hook them up with a Tivo/Replay (which you have to buy). No fuss and less cables everywhere = good.

I'm pretty sure it is. I'm trying to remember what three shows we were recording/watching a week or so ago. I know he was recording The O.C. (for a friend!), The West Wing, but I can't remember what we were watching. Maybe we were watching another recorded show, I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure we were watching a third live show.

Either way, it's badass and I wish TW Houston would get off their asses.

I think you were recording 2 shows and watching an already recorded show. I went over to Scientific Atlanta's website, and I found this .pdf file about the cable box (Scientific Atlanta 8000 box, which both Austin and NYC uses). I quote:

"Broaden your choices - Now you can record one program and change channels to watch another program at the same time. In fact, you can record two programs airing simultaneously. And while recording the two programs, you can select a third, pre-recorded program to watch at the same time.

There it is from the horse's mouth...

And yes, Houston gets shafted big-time by TW.

I feel a little better now. I'm not missing out on anything new in Austin. But still...
