Samuel Dalembert had tears in his eyes talking about the devastation he witnessed, up close, in earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

The 76ers center, who spent a whirlwind 24 hours getting into and out of his native country, landed at Philadelphia International Airport less than an hour before the Sixers' game last night against Portland at the Wachovia Center.

On no sleep, Dalembert scored 10 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a 98-90 loss. He fouled out with 1 minute, 18 seconds remaining.

"It hurts," Dalembert said, standing in front of his locker.

Dalembert spoke of watching a leg amputation, of flies buzzing, of surgeries performed on kitchen tables.

"We're in the process of negotiating tents for a ton of people over there," said Dalembert, who last week donated $130,000 to UNICEF and last night pledged $250,000 more.

While there, Dalembert said he and former NBA star Alonzo Mourning met with Haitian President René Preval.

Said Dalembert: "The situation is so terrible: going to the bathroom, eating, food, water."

When speaking about Haitian children and the adoption process, Dalembert choked up. He said he would soon take another trip with UNICEF.

On Monday night, Dalembert did not return with the team from Minneapolis, instead traveling with Project Medishare to Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince to ensure the safety of his family and help with relief efforts.

He was excused from Tuesday's practice.

Dalembert departed Haiti before yesterday's aftershock, boarding a connecting flight in Miami.
